Acid3 test simplified; all modern browsers score 100

The Acid3 Test, which was long considered to be the standard browser test for web standards compatibility has been revised and simplified. All current modern browsers, including IE9, IE10, Chrome 14-16, Firefox 6-8 and Opera 11, now score a perfect 100x100 result. According to Ian Hickson, who maintains the Acidtests website, there have been several revisions, including SVG Fonts, a feature that was criticized by Mozilla. Hickson said that changes also affected SMIL animations, Xlink as well as DOM Range. Overall, it appears that the developers cleaned up the test and removed antiquated and unusual web technologies.

Intel: Ivy Bridge GPU to support 4K resolutions

Color us unsurprised that Ivy Bridge is destined to be faster and smaller than its predecessor, but unbeknownst to us is an interesting tidbit concerning the upcoming architecture's GPU. The revamp will support resolutions in excess of 4K (topping out at a maximum of 4,096 x 4,096) — a sizable jump from the WQXGA (2,560 x 1,600) limitation of its Sandy Bridge's forebearer — opening the door to all sorts of resolution independent goodness. Guess that means you won't need a discrete GPU in the future to power that bodacious (but pricey) pro-level display.

Microsoft to offer discounted hardware, software to students from low-income families

You don't need a PhD in economics to realize that times are pretty tough right now - especially for those at the lower end of the income ladder. Fortunately, though, Microsoft has announced a new initiative aimed at providing one million students from low-income families with discounted hardware, software and broadband service. This three-year digital inclusion program is an extension of Redmond's Shape the Future campaign, which, over the course of five years, has already put computers in the hands of more than 10 million underprivileged children around the globe.

Skycast launches Android-powered in-flight entertainment system

Skycast Solutions unveils its brand new Trayvu device, an android system to be integrated into existing and future seating systems. Last week we caught news of future Boeing 787s coming equipped with Android Entertainment Systems, but it looks like older planes will also get some in-flight Android entertainment thanks to Skycast Solutions' brand new Trayvu. Trayvu is designed to be easily integrated into the trays of airplanes located on the back side of seats.

Samsung moves to block iPhone 5 in Korea, expands its anti-Apple offensive

Well, since Samsung couldn't get an early peek at the iPhone 5 and iPad 3, the company has simply decided to take a page from Apple's playbook. A senior exec told The Korea Times it plans to file a request to block the sale of the upcoming iOS handset in its Korean homeland the moment the device is announced. According to the Times, the anonymous exec said it would leverage its wireless technology patents and demand that Apple either remove the telecommunications features — turning the iPhone into an iPod touch — or simply be banished from the Korean market.
