New York Times now offers in-app subscriptions for the iPad

It looks Apple is winning the war against publishers who don't agree with Apple's policy of giving the company 30% of every in-app sale it makes. The New York Times, one of the companies that held out against Apple's strict policy has made a last minute change to its app to prevent its removal from the App Store. The New York Times was issued a warning by the Cupertino company to include in-app subscriptions on its iOS app by June 30th or face removal.

SleepWell System Puts Mobile Devices To Sleep To Conserve Power While Waiting On WiFi

SleepWell System Puts Mobile Devices To Sleep To Conserve Power While Waiting On WiFi

With the explosion of smartphones and tablets in the market, followed by the increase in number of WiFi hotspots, sometimes it can be hard to get a decent connection for your downloads. Perhaps surfing the web at Starbucks is still passable, but try download a big file and you may be stuck there for an hour or so due to the sheer number of people hogging the connection. While the hogging is inevitable, the fact of the matter is that the longer you have your smartphone or tablet on to download a file, the more battery it will drain, which is why Duke University graduate student Justin Manweiler came up with the SleepWell system.

Verizon 'iPhone Better4G Smartphone' merchandising material is a sham

Verizon 'iPhone Better4G Smartphone' merchandising material is a sham

The folks over at Droid-life recently got their hands on a snapshot of what appears to be a box of Verizon merchandising materials labelled "iPhone Better 4G Smartphone". Now first thing that would've come to mind for most people would be "Oh my god - it's the 4G iPhone!" but unfortunately the truth couldn't be further from that. Droid-life managed to take a gander at the contents of the box, but none of the enclosed material even made a single mention of 4G and the iPhone at all. What a way to pique the curiosity of everybody and then shoot it down. I wonder what Verizon was thinking when they decided to label a box in such a fashion.

Samsung Files Complaint Versus Apple, Wants Importation Ban on iDevices

Looks like it is not over between Apple and Samsung as the latter has filed another complaint against Steve Job's megacompany. A report on the International Trade Commission website states that Samsung requests an import ban against all the iDevices (iPhone, iPad, and iPod). The investigation on this issue could last for up to 16 months, that is if the ITC decides to investigate the complaint. In case you are still out of the loop about this beautiful relationship gone sour, here's the gist of it: Apple started it. The iPhone maker filed a complaint back in April about how Samsung's products have blatantly copied Apple's gadgets.

T-mobile UK is now listing the HTC Flyer Android tablet with a “July” release date attached to it, a device which will no doubt be promoted alongside its new unlimited mobile data tariffs. We're rather keen on the Flyer, with or without an update to Android 3.0, so a chance to pick one up on a decent subsidised contract is a winner. Here's the visual confirmation….
…plus the network will also be stocking the HTC Sensation from July.

Skype for Android's latest release apparently supports only a bunch of other handsets – the HTC Desire S, Sony Ericsson Xperia neo, Sony Ericsson Xperia pro and the Google Nexus S. Trust the ever enterprising spirit of mankind to hack said version to include video call support on all the other non-listed Android-powered smartphones. The particular version that we're referring to was released with the Samsung Galaxy S2 in mind, although the performance will not be limited to just that particular smartphone.

DIY solar-powered walkway leads you home when it's dark

It's not often you find yourself struggling to find your way to your front door in the middle of the night - unless you live in a neighborhood with no streetlamps, in an area perpetually shrouded in darkness. But just in case you do - DepotDevoid has the solution for you. He created a walkway that's lit up by solar-powered lights. In the day time, the lights just reside on the ground, soaking up the rays of the sun, biding time until it's finally dark in the sky, when they can be put to good to use. While some people might deem it unnecessary, it never hurt anybody to place a few “green” lights out on your lawn.

Having a robot around the home can be quite handy, just ask Anakin Skywalker in his younger days. Robots in science fiction movies seem to have gotten down the difficult part down pat – we're referring to the sense of touch as well as pressure, how does a robot know just how much pressure to apply when handling fragile items like champagne flutes and eggs, and when to tighten their grip enough to carry something heavy. Perhaps a sense of touch might help them along, thanks to the new hexagonal plate skin.

Facebook Valued at $70 Billion

We have heard plenty of rumored valuations of Facebook, some of which went as high as $100 billion. There is a more tangible number available as investment fund GSV Capital just bought 225,000 Facebook shares at an average price of $29.28 per share. Since Facebook currently has 2.4 billion outstanding shares, the purchase assumes a Facebook value of currently $70.3 billion. Not bad.

Those who are extremely familiar with technical jargon surrounding handsets would know by now that the 5MP suffix is a dead giveaway concerning the camera's resolution. Suffice to say, the Nokia C5-00 5MP will come with a 5.0-megapixel EDoF (enhanced depth of field) camera, which is superior to its earlier 3.2-megapixel version. The camera isn't the only enhancement thrown into the mix though, as you will get an internal storage boost from 50MB to 270MB, while the RAM amount has also doubled to 256MB.

The Nokia 700 has a 3.2″ nHD AMOLED screen, which points to this being a Nokia C6-01 replacement. The Nokia 700 is also reportedly quite light (a bit over 80g) and measures 110 x 51 x 10mm, which doesn't quite mesh with the “thinnest smartphone ever” claim, but those measurements may change as its design is still being developed.

Apple throws a wrench in Jailbreaking for iOS 5

Apple throws a wrench in Jailbreaking for iOS 5

While iOS 5 may bring about MANY welcome changes to the Apple handheld experience, it looks like Apple may have just rained a monsoon on the jailbreaking community's parade. With the new iteration of iOS, Apple have axed the ability to save SHSH blobs, which is what allows users to downgrade to previous iOS firmware through iTunes.  Heck, even the iPad 2 doesn't have an untethered jailbreak at this moment. What this means is that if you are looking to downgrading your OS, you'll be limited to pre iOS5 firmware. This is not just a problem for potential jailbreakers.

Swiffy makes Flash content iOS-friendly

It looks like Google is pretty intent on killing off Flash. The company has just released a new tool that lets users easily convert Flash files into HTML5-compliant code that can be pretty much viewed on any device including iOS devices. To use Swiffy, all users have to do is upload the Flash files in SWF format to the Swiffy website. The file is then processed by the website which then generates a JSON file. A client-side JavaScript runtime loads the JSON file and renders it using HTML, SVG and CSS.

At the moment it can only convert simple Flash files, so don't expect to be porting over complex games to HTML5.
