ASUS PadFone Mini Is Now Official

ASUS PadFone Mini Is Now Official

It was just late last night when we talked about how ASUS' CEO mentioned that they will make their way to the US market by introducing a new mobile device with a major carrier next year. Well, some of us might not have that kind of patience, which could be why ASUS has also ensured that folks who love all things ASUS get some Yuletide cheer in the form of the ASUS PadFone mini.

New Speck case for the iPad mini with Retina display

New Speck case for the iPad mini with Retina display

If you're giving or getting a new iPad mini with Retina display for the holidays, you're probably thinking about cases for it, too.  Consider the StyleFolio from Speck for a full-body protective case.  The StyleFolio has a “vegan leather” exterior, an anti-scratch interior, and a hard shell to cradle the mini.  It operates as a multi-angle stand for viewing or typing on the mini.  It doesn't have magnets to operate the mini's sleep/wake function; instead, it has a plastic buckle to lock the case closed so you don't have to worry it will pop open in your gear bag.

LG G2 Mini Rumored

LG G2 Mini Rumored

Have you ever wondered as to why certain companies like to roll out a “mini” version of a perfectly fine and working handset. Perhaps it is because they have already done their bit to position the brand of the smartphone in such a way where it might cost even more money to actually start branding a new kind of device, so why not save that dough with some of the work already completed, use a similar looking chassis at a smaller physical form factor with lesser specs, and rely on the same name, except that there is the suffix “mini” behind it.

Does our government have too much power over our mobile and internet data?

We are communicating faster, better and more often than ever before. We can thank the internet and mobile communications for most of that, but with such power we must also be more careful. Laws on the matter are still evolving, making our internet/cellphone data the most valuable source of information for our government (and all others across the world). If you think about it, our smartphones and computers know everything about us. More so than even your spouse, sometimes.

Generally speaking, the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG S Wagon is no slouch. It's considerably more sporting than some full-blown sports cars, all while being able to haul the kids to soccer practice or make a quick trip to the grocery store. What if you want more, though. Well, if the E63's 577 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque aren't enough to sate your appetite for power, the team from Brabus is just a phone call away, and now the German tuning house has turned its hand to the E63 Wagon.

The perfect iPad accessory for the geek in your life this holiday season...

I think the Smart Covers Apple sells simply do not do their iPads justice. To create such a great tech-sexy piece of hardware only to cover/protect its screen with plastic is just tragic… and to charge $40 for it to boot. Well, as the story goes, I was dancing the Net looking for a worthy and unique leather alternative, and I came across the MakeThingsBetter page on Etsy.  It not only caught my attention enough to look through the site but write this up AND also add the Game of Thrones “Winter is Coming” iPad mini Smart Cover to my Christmas wish list.

The 2014 Soul has come on strong since its introduction, going so far as to become the Korean automaker's top-selling model last month, but Kia isn't wasting any time in creating a little extra excitement for its boxy hatchback. Although the name is a little wonky, the Kia Soul Red Zone marks the first special-edition model for the second-gen Soul, and its styling is meant to mimic the 2012 Track'ster Concept, the showcar that inspired the design of the 2014 Soul. If you're into 3D printing as much as we are, then you're probably aware 3D scanners are pretty expensive. We've seen the affordably-priced Sense 3D scanner, which retails for around $400, but a smartphone app can make 3D scanning even cheaper as you'll be able to produce 3D scans straight from your device. Researchers at ETH Zurich have created an application that allows an everyday smartphone to be able to capture and display 3D models, which can then be fine tuned a bit to then be 3D printed.

EA Stocks Dip After Announcing Halt On Battlefield 4 DLCs

Earlier we had reported that EA had announced that they will be putting a halt on future Battlefield 4 DLCs until they can fix the game, at least get it into a more playable condition. This is due to the numerous complaints and criticisms that EA and DICE have been receiving over how buggy the game is, which EA's VP admitted himself. Well it turns out that while EA's decision to halt future DLCs might sit well with gamers and showed that the company was dedicated to making and publishing great games, investors of the company seemed to think other, as EA's stocks took a dip after they announced their decision.

It was only a few years ago that companies such as Samsung were demonstrating displays that were flexible, and while it was rumored for a while, the fruition of their efforts were realized this year with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Round and the LG G Flex, both of which have gone on sale to regular consumers, as opposed to merely being prototypes or concepts. While both devices do feature pretty curved displays, they are still somewhat rigid and apart from novelty value, there really isn't much use to owning one at the moment.

Security on your computer is of utmost importance, but as we have mentioned many a time, a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. In fact, it was just yesterday when we talked about how researchers have managed to come up with a proof-of-concept malware that can spread through audio signals alone, putting to death the notion that a computer that is not linked to the Internet or network in any way is safe from such malicious programs. Earlier this morning, a botnet attempt managed to see the leak of over 2 million passwords that could offer access to multiple online services.

The Nokia Lumia 1520 is the Finnish company's latest handset, and also its biggest with a display measuring 6" in size. Just like the rest of Nokia's lineup, save for the Lumia 925, the Lumia 1520 features a polycarbonate body. Some have criticized Nokia's choice of using plastics, instead of more "premium" materials like glass and aluminum, but it turns out that Nokia's choice has to do with sustainability as well. The company has recently released a video on YouTube in which it illustrates how Nokia has given CDs a new lease on life by recycling them, transforming them into polycarbonate, which is then used in devices like the Lumia 1520.

In the world of consumerism, we like to get the most bang for our buck. Take pocket multi-tools for example, we think the more things we can use it for the better and in most cases I would agree. One thing that's almost certain is that the quality of the sound from flat screen TV speakers rarely equals the quality of the picture.  It's understandable, considering the size and location of the speakers.  You can of course invest in a surround-sound system and wire up your TV viewing room, or there is the option of the sound bar.  Boston Acoustics has taken a different approach with their TVee One Speaker Base.  Setting it up was a snap and it sounds good too.The acoustic base works for TVs up to 60 lbs and with base dimensions not greater than 21.5″ X 13″.

DIY Cellphone Is Back Again

DIY Cellphone Is Back Again

It was last year when we brought you David Mellis' DIY Cellphone, and it seems that he has been up to more tinkering this time around with yet another DIY cellphone which, from the name itself, you know you are able to make one up with your two hands if you have the necessary amount of time and technical know how. The DIY cellphone is capable of making and receiving phone calls and text messages, in addition to storing names and their corresponding numbers. Oh yeah, did we mention that it can also tell the time. Sounds pretty much like a standard issue featurephone from Nokia of yore, no.

Samsung's Marketing Budget Stands At $14 Billion

Samsung's Marketing Budget Stands At $14 Billion

The advertising industry certainly has its fair share of ups and downs, but one thing's for sure – there is plenty of money to be made in this particular industry. From what we know, Samsung is tipped to spend a whopping $14 billion in 2013 alone when it comes to advertising and promoting its consumer electronics to the masses. That would make Samsung be on top of a list that they most probably would not want to, that is, having the largest percentage of revenue compared to any of the other top 20 companies (by revenue) when it comes to splurging on advertising.
