MobileMe/iCloud phishing scam on the rise again

Apple announced its intentions to replace MobileMe with iCloud earlier this year at the WWDC 2011, and not long after that, phishing scams taking advantage of this update started to rise. While it wasn't so huge back then, it looks like those phishing scams have started to rise again, according to a report from MacRumors. Apparently quite a number of its readers are receiving emails telling them to visit a website to update their MobileMe account so they can make the transition over to iCloud.

Facial recognition advertising now available

Facial recognition advertising now available

Remember the movie Minority Report and how stores and advertisements would be able to recognize a person and greet them accordingly. For those who may not have watched the movie or have forgotten, there are scenes in the movie where Tom Cruise's character enters a departmental store and a billboard advertisement, and by scanning his eyes they were able to recognize him, and greeted him and listed his preferences. It's a pretty neat feature and it does add a personal touch to the whole affair, and it looks like the technology is here and already exists The Venetian resort in Las Vegas.

Apple patent suggests privacy glasses

Apple patent suggests privacy glasses

Don't you just hate it when you're sending an email or text message on your phone, or just surfing the web, and the person sitting next to you can't help but keep peering over your shoulder. Some of you guys out there may not care, but for others who may be sending sensitive or personal messages or emails, a recently published patent by Apple could take care of that problem for you. Granted there are privacy screen protectors, which basically are super shiny and essentially limits the viewing angle, but it looks like Apple is not content with those protectors and has plans to make iOS devices a lot more secure.

ETRO robot wears its heart on its face, promises to love you

We prefer our robots stick to the household cleaning chores, a little DJing action even, and then go right back to the closet. But, when we first glimpsed this emoting automaton from Korea's Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, our fears of the day of robot reckoning subsided slightly. The ETRI-built robot (or ETRO for short) is currently "employed" as an ambassador for human-robot relations at Daejon's National Science Museum, treating amused passersby to outspoken professions of love backed by its LED-lit facial expressions.

HP's PC blunder will deteriorate HP brand value, analyst says

It remains to be seen whether Hewlett-Packard's upcoming overhaul will pay off in the long run, but one things seems clear: the manner in which HP revealed its plans was ill-conceived at best. HP's announcements sent its stock tumbling, and analysts continue to lose faith in the company as unrest builds. In a note to investors on Thursday, RBC Capital Markets analyst Amit Daryanani cut his rating on HP stock to Sector Perform from Outperform, and he lowered his price target $5 to $30.

EA's Origin sends personal data to third parties

EA's Origin sends personal data to third parties

Part of Origin's EULA allows Electronic Arts to snoop through your system — including installed and uninstalled software — and send that information to third-party service providers. The gaming publisher is currently under fire by outraged consumers after a close examination of the End User License Agreement for Origin reveals that it grants EA the right to snoop through desktops and laptops once the user agrees to the terms. If that wasn't invasive enough, the agreement also allows EA to share all that information to third party service providers.

Tablet shipments may approach 250 million units in 2017

Shipments of consumer media tablets like the Apple iPad are expected to approach 250 million units in 2017, a report from In-Stat suggests. While analysts at In-Stat see tablet adoption growing rapidly over the next six years, even a number as large as 250 million is conservative when considering the estimates other firms have recently reported. IHS iSuppli, for example, increased its estimates earlier this week, suggesting tablet shipments will surpass 275 million units in 2015.
