Samsung Galaxy smartphones vulnerable to remote wipe assault?

Samsung Galaxy smartphones vulnerable to remote wipe assault?

If you own a select Samsung smartphone, be forewarned – a security researcher is concerned after claiming to have exposed a vulnerability in some Samsung handsets, potentially leaving them open to a remote wipe attack. According to Ravi Borgaonkar, he demonstrated the attack at the Ekoparty security conference, where he showed just how a hacker is able to direct the user to a webpage that contains malicious code, where a remote wipe assault might eventually cause untold factory reset nightmares for the smartphone's owner.

BoxWave GeckoGrip Samsung Galaxy S3 Case Review

BoxWave GeckoGrip Samsung Galaxy S3 Case Review

I normally don't use a case on my phone. But my latest phone (Samsung Galaxy S3) feels too plasticy (technical term, look it up) and slippery. I've been trying to find the thinnest back cover that adds grip without a lot of bulk. BoxWave offered to send me their GeckoGrip case, I accepted and have been using it for the past few days. Here are my thoughts.

Note: Images can be clicked to view a larger size.

First of all, the inside of this snap on back cover can be used as a mirror due to its shiny chrome finish. It looks like polished metal, but it's really just plastic.

The GeckoGrip is available in 6 different colors.

Google's driverless car now permitted on California roadways

. California Governor Jerry Brown signed a bill into law on Tuesday that will allow autonomous vehicles such as Google's (GOOG) to be tested on California roads, the Associated Press reported. As a precautionary measure, the law requires a licensed individual to be in the driver's seat at all times to take over control if need be. “Today we're looking at science fiction becoming tomorrow's reality - the self-driving car,” Brown said while signing the bill at Google's Mountain View headquarters.

BBM for BlackBerry 10 gets a retooled UI, predictive keyboard with language detection

Everyone's favorite messaging service, BBM has broke from cover in its new BlackBerry 10 digs at BlackBerry Jam Americas 2012. The software is sporting a redesigned UI, which places the focus on your contacts' photos instead of the regular ol' list of names. Speech bubbles that we've all become familiar with are still here and emoticons get cozy as well.

iPhone 5′s A6 processor found to have dual-core CPU, triple-core GPU

iPhone 5′s A6 processor found to have dual-core CPU, triple-core GPU

. Never one to tout pure technical specs, Apple (AAPL) left a lot of geeks and nerds scratching their heads as to how the iPhone 5 manages to push twice the processing power and twice the graphics. UBM Tech Insights took some diffusion images of the A6 processor that powers iPhone 5 and discovered that the system on a chip has three GPU cores. That's one less than the quad-core GPUs found in the new iPad (third-generation). But what does that mean for the  user?

Without getting too geeky, it means games on iOS might finally rival those of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Facebook brings search history to Activity Log, keeps queries private

Last week at TechCrunch Disrupt, Mark Zuckerberg let loose that Facebook would create a search engine “at some point,” and today the firm snuck in a smidgen of emphasis on queries into the Activity Log. Over the coming weeks, your searches on the social network will appear alongside the links, comments and other actions that are normally aggregated in the feature. Worried that friends will learn of your quest to find My Little Pony pages. There's nothing to fear as the log is for your eyes only.

Toyota reworks Verso for Paris

Toyota reworks Verso for Paris

The seven-seat Toyota Verso mini-MPV was introduced at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, two years on its successor will be introduced in Paris in about a week. The mid-cycle changes include more than 300 new parts with threefold aims: bringing the exterior design in line with the just-refreshed Auris, upgrading the fit and finish and improving the driving dynamics. That means a redesigned nose with elements that emphasize the length and width of the car, like narrower headlights with daytime LEDs, tweaked taillamps above a rear bumper with an integrated diffuser, and in a reversal of trend, smaller door mirrors with integrated turn signals.

Nokia cops to powering Amazon's mapping service

Well, Amazon is being pretty tight lipped about the details of its mapping service, but Nokia isn't afraid to spill the beans. A spokesperson for the Finish company, Sebastian Kurme, told The Next Web that Amazon is indeed licensing the Nokia Location Platform for its latest Google-shunning product. We reached out as well and were fed the exact same official statement, confirming that Nokia is becoming an even bigger player in the mapping sphere. The platform is already the basis for Yahoo. Maps and a large portion of Bing's offerings as well.

Carbonite Mobile backs up the contents of your phone, Android version supports remote wipes

Before today, Carbonite had a few mobile apps, but the backup process was something of a one-way street: you could access content on your handset, but you couldn't back up the contents of your phone. That changes today with Carbonite Mobile, a free app for iOS and Android that allows you to upload photos and other files to Carbonite.com. In addition to backup, though, the Android version offers some features typically reserved for standalone mobile security apps - things like remote wiping and the ability to reset the phone to factory settings if it falls into the wrong hands.

iPhone 5 buyers report phones arriving scuffed and scratched out of the box

. Each time Apple (AAPL) launches a new iPhone, two things are expected: sales records and scandals. In the former category, Apple announced last week that it sold twice as many iPhones during the iPhone 5′s first 24 hours of pre-sales availability than it did last year, and the company confirmed on Monday that opening-weekend sales topped 5 million units.

Hot Wheels nails big boy world record corkscrew jump

If you're anything like us (adult men with a love of cars, reasonable amounts of disposable income and way too much time on our hands during the day) you might have anywhere from five to 500 feet of orange Hot Wheels track in your basement. If you do, you've likely twisted, suspended, stapled and/or taped that track around your living quarters, trying to make tiny cars do amazingly sweet tricks. What you haven't done, nor we, is ramp up (heh) the whole business to life-size scale.

Google's allowed its users to delete search data for a while, and although few choose to, it makes a lot of people feel better. Facebook's search history may be even more incriminating than Google's history. Have you ever searched for a ex? Facebook today allowed users to delete their search histories.

To take a look, go under the Activity Log button on your homepage. In addition to the ability to delete it, you can look back over your previous searches–try not to feel too embarrassed.
