LG celebrates three million LTE phones sold worldwide, shockingly finds high speed data is awesome

LG has hitched its mobile fate to the future of LTE high speed data equipped phones basically since the technology was introduced and today it announced the fruits of its labor: three million LTE phones sold to date worldwide. While some will quibble over shipped / sold to end-user counting methods, or how this compares to figures recently touted by competition like Samsung and Apple, we need only look at LG's most recent earnings report to see the positive impact its LTE-infused lineup has had.

Viewsonic to release a 22-inch Android Tablet – Is that too big?

. Bigger is always better, right. Well, such is not always the case; at least not for everyone. But Viewsonic is sure that there is a good market for a 22-inch tablet (or table?), and is planning to announce one at Taipei's Computex. Viewsonic calls it a “smart business tablet monitor,” which pretty much explains what the company is aiming for with this product.

Users have displayed both love and hate towards the first larger tablets. The best example would be Toshiba's Excite 13, which has a 13-inch display. Some thought it was a great idea, and would be great for media and entertainment.

The rumors and leaks go back a bit further, but it was a year ago today that Google officially revealed its Google Wallet mobile payment service - a platform that the company is still betting big on, even if it may be slightly reconsidering the way it does business. While it might not have taken off quite as quickly as Google would have liked, the past year has still been a fairly eventful one for the service - albeit occasionally for reasons the company would prefer you forget - and the next year proves to be even more challenging as the service faces increased competition.

Samsung releases Official Top 40 Chart App music streamer

Here's a weird new thing on offer from Samsung, a music app that gives users “unlimited plays” of the records that make up the UK's top 40 music chart. The app is free to download, but there's a £1 a week charge for access to the tunes once the initial trial period expires. However, the app isn't showing as available for installation on ANY of the Android devices we've used thus far, Samsung-made or otherwise, so we're guessing this one must be an exclusive for someone, somewhere.

RIM patent application puts pressure on sensitive touchscreens for a possible unlock alternative

RIM patent application puts pressure on sensitive touchscreens for a possible unlock alternative

RIM's been busy on the patent application front lately, filing off concepts for anything from smartphone docks to rotating keypads — even flirting with potential forays into forensics peripherals. Perhaps sensing the crushing need to differentiate its ailing BlackBerry brand, Waterloo's taken to the USPTO with a doc submitted last November that could do just that. The pressure-sensitive input scheme and touchscreen interface described therein would respond to a user-set pattern of force by granting access to a handheld device's features and applications.

Chris Harris explains what makes his own 1986 BMW M5 so special

The 70s were a definitive decade for music and movies. Fashion and cars, not so much. The 80s corrected one of those oversights, an era of ethereal supercars like the Porsche 959, game-changing exotics like the Ferrari Testarossa, and, best of all, everday cannons that offered mortals a generous portion of lairy thrills, such as Chris Harris' 1986 e28 BMW M5. In 1986, a 3,100-pound, 286-horsepower luxury sedan straight from the factory that could also handle was as rare as a goose with lips.

Used to be if Renault wanted to celebrate a Formula One team with special edition, it would celebrate its own. But having sold the bulk of its own team to Lotus and Genii Capital in favor of supplying engines to a greater variety of independent teams, its latest commemorative hot hatches honor the (current) king of them all: Red Bull Racing. Just a couple of months ago, Renaultsport rolled out the special RBR edition Clio, and is now following up with a similar treatment applied to the smaller Twingo (with a special edition Megane to follow).

Although PayPal's mobile payment system started out small with a Home Depot deal, that snowball is quickly rolling itself into a boulder. Starting next month, 15 extra US retailers will be happy to see you slap down your smartphone (not literally, we hope) instead of a credit card. The selection leads us to think a lot of smartphone owners like to shop for wearables - Aéropostale, Foot Locker and JC Penney are in the batch, along with others - but there's a few useful exceptions, like Barnes & Noble, Jamba Juice and TigerDirect.

Diablo 3 hotfixes tweak class skills, fix disconnection bugs

Many of the balance changes that Diablo 3 players have been noticing recently have been confirmed by a new set of patch notes outlining a couple of significant updates Blizzard have made over the course of the past week. As suspected, the Monk, the Demon Hunter and the Wizard have had their most exploitative abilities squished. A number of other bugs have been fixed too, which means we will sadly no longer be able to dual wield double handed weapons, but on the plus side, trying to remove gems from an unsocketed item won't cause the game to disconnect.

Report: BBM Will Remain BlackBerry-Exclusive

I know many people who got excited when rumors spread around about BlackBerry Messenger becoming ported to Android or iOS, but a recent report from the Wall Street Journal says that will never happen. The broadsheet, citing sources knowledgeable about the matter, says that Research In Motion's new CEO Thorsten Heins decided that the company should not pursue licensing deals. The decision, if confirmed, could be a letdown for many BlackBerry users wanting to jump ship, leaving them with their BBs with a dwindling BBM contact list as their friends switch to iPhone or Android.

Renault has turned over a few more photos of its all-new Alpine A110-50 ahead of the machine's debut at this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix. The new shots show off the sports car's rear end for the first time. The total package looks more than a little like the Renault DeZir concept, though we're told the chassis is borrowed almost entirely from the company's Megane Trophy. If the two machines share more than bones, that means we can expect to see a 3.5-liter V6 engine mounted mid-ship.

Munich's regional court has ruled that Motorola is infringing one of Microsoft's patents relating to displaying multiple SMS messages. It's one of the sub-cases that's separate to the larger FRAND matters that are raging along in the background, but still has enormous ramifications. Redmond's deputy general counsel, David Howard said that he hoped Motorola would (join over 70 percent of all Android OEMs) license Microsoft's patent portfolio. If Google's latest plaything doesn't start writing cheques, then it's likely to have its handsets banned from Germany, at least in the short term.

Suzuki cozying up with Fiat?

Fiat and Tata has reportedly stepped away from a tieup in the Indian market that saw Fiats being built in India, using engines shared with Tata and Maruti models, and being sold through Tata dealers. Neither company commented, but according to analysts, the issue was that in addition to Tata was simply too busy with its other endeavors, especially Jaguar Land Rover, to attend to the Fiat deal. Sales of the joint-venture vehicles have declined by more than 20 percent year-on-year. The Fiat-Tata union isn't binding, and talk has now centered around Fiat snuggling up with Suzuki.

Sure, there are plenty of VoIP and video calling apps out there, but few are simple and beautiful. Enter Sidecar, a free app which aims to reinvent the way we make phone calls by adding messaging as well as real-time video, photo, location and contact sharing to that antiquated calling experience.

Analysts predict acceleration in HDD storage density growth

Market research firm IHS predicts a fast increase in HDD storage densities and, as a result, a similarly strong increase in storage capacities. The faster pace will be driven by a need to record massive amounts of audio and video data and require a new technology that can break through the density barrier of the current perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology. IHS believes that the average density of 744 Gb per square inch in 2011 will grow at an average of about 19 percent over the next few years and reach 1.8 Tb by 2016.

German carrier Vodafone has announced that it'll be the first to bring the XL home, complete with triband LTE in tow. Just like the American "One X," the new Euro XL ditches the quad-core Tegra 3 for a 1.5GHz dual-core S4, primarily because the NVIDIA solution doesn't support LTE. Though, as an added bonus, we're sure it helps extend the life of that 1,800 mAh cell inside.

A team from MIT has decided to end slow-pouring ketchup problems once and for all with its LiquiGlide project. Instead of karate-chopping the 57 logo on the bottle's neck, a super-non-stick coating is sprayed on the inside of its glass container. It's so good that even highly viscous liquids like ketchup and mayonnaise roll out of the bottle and onto your dinner as if it was water. All the chemicals used are already FDA approved, meaning that it's already safe to be used in food production. If adopted, it'd save around one million tons of trapped sauce from being wasted every year.

If your smartphone or camcorder has the processing grunt to handle it, either of the sensors can record 4K (3840 x 2160, to be exact) video at a super-smooth 60 fps, or at the camera's full 4608 x 3456 if you're willing to putt along at 30 fps.
