U.S. Air Force plans to order up to 18,000 iPads

. The United States Air Force awarded a $9.36 million contract to purchase up to 18,000 Apple iPads, Bloomberg report on Friday. The military will use the tablets to replace paper manuals and navigation charts carried by pilots and navigators. “Aircrews fly nonstop worldwide missions and require access to flight publications both on and off the aircraft, throughout all phases of flight,” Captain Kathleen Ferrero, an Air Force spokeswoman, said. The “electronic flight bags” will help crews operate more effectively and safely, and support the Pentagon's efficiency goals.

Malicious apps beware, Windows 8 will feature a ‘kill switch'

. “Kill switches” have become a standard part of most mobile operating systems. Apple, Amazon, Microsoft and Google each have the ability to remotely delete malicious applications from users' devices without permission. With the launch Windows 8 later this year, millions of computers will receive similar functionality for the first time according to Bloomberg. Microsoft hasn't spoken publicly about Windows 8′s inclusion of the feature, having only confirmed to Bloomberg that it will have the ability to remotely delete or update applications downloaded through the Windows 8 app store.

...And here's the catch: the game you need is Motorstorm Arctic Edge (or 'Raging Ice' in Japan), and it appears to have already been pulled from the PS Store. Besides, it was never compatible with US-registered Vitas in the first place. Nevertheless, if you happen to have bought this old PSP title for your Vita already, then this may just work. Hacker Wololo claims that later today he'll release Vita Half Byte Loader files, which will give you a "limited PSP homebrew experience" on your lovely new handheld - and indeed we've already seen it playing Sega Genesis titles.

Sewage plants can double up as power stations

How do you turn something that stinks to the utmost heavens into a source of power. That is definitely possible, with a new device which could potentially be used to transform sewage plants into power stations. This particular breakthrough will see the combination of fuel cell with other technologies, delivering much-needed juice to power entire water grids. We are talking about using sewage to generate electricity using a new device, where it will merge a fuel cell with other technologies in order to convert waste water treatment stations into power plants.

Canon's new fullframe flagship is born, behold the 5D Mark III

Nikon did it a couple of weeks ago by announcing their new twins in the professional DSLR segment (D4 and D800/E). Today Canon held a global press event where they announced the result of their long overdue pregnancy, the 5D Mark III. The 5D is, and has always been the flagship camera for the professional on the road portrait shooter. However the 5D doesn't limit itself to solely portrait purposes, I dare say you will find a fair deal of 5Ds in the Sports and Wildlife photographer's backpacks.

Volkswagen bringing four Up! concepts to Geneva

The Up. supermini goes on sale in Europe in a few days, but Volkswagen has already been hard at work casting about for ideas to expand beyond the three-door model available at launch. A five-door will go on sale later this year, and VW showed a few Up. concepts last fall at the Frankfurt Motor Show. For Geneva next week, the cute little city car gets four new outfits: Swiss Up!, Winter Up!, X Up!, and Cargo Up!

The Swiss Up! is the red one, notable only in that the seat backs contain leather bands suitable for storing Swiss Army knives (seriously?).

Apple's OS share skyrockets in February as Android inches up, BlackBerry slides

. Apple's share of global smartphone and tablet usage skyrocketed in February after remaining somewhat flat over the previous three months. Analytics firm Net Applications on Thursday released mobile phone and tablet operating system share data for February, and Apple showed the most gains last month by a wide margin. The Cupertino, California-based company saw its share increase to 60.59% from 53.65% in January as Android inched up less than a point to 19.02% and RIM's BlackBerry platform slid nearly a point to 2.59%, it's second lowest monthly share over the past 12 months.

Apple sues Chinese vendor over the use of “EPAD”

Apple was recently sued over the usage of the name “iPad” in China, and now it looks like the company is seeking retribution elsewhere by filing a complaint against another company. This time the recipient of the lawsuit is a company named EBox Digital Technology Product for using the name “EPAD” for its products. And if the first thing that came to mind were knock-off tablets, I wouldn't blame you but in this case, name is currently being used for laptop luggage cases sold by the company.

Back in July, when Mozilla announced their Boot to Gecko mobile OS initiative, I thought: "What the heck. How on Earth are they going to do it. How long will it take. Is it even possible to build phone OS on open Web technologies like HTML 5 and Javascript? And how can they even hope to succeed against well-funded iOS and Android juggernauts?".
Well, today we have the answers to at least first three questions. Mozilla already has a working prototype of Boot to Gecko running on Samsung Galaxy S2.

One of the coolest things being showcased at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona is definitely Liquipel. In short, Liquipel makes your phone (or iPod shuffle) waterproof. The tech can be contracted by phone makers to deploy on a massive scale, but at the same time it's also a consumer service. It is, in fact, the only waterproofing tech available direct to consumers.
The magic happens thanks to nanotechnology that bonds a waterproof coating to the surface (and innards) of your device – at the molecular level. The process only takes around 30 minutes, and it's going to last forever, Liquipel reps have told me.
