Scientists Find Substitute for Whale Vomit in Perfume

Scientists Find Substitute for Whale Vomit in Perfume

For a long time now, ambergris which is a waxy substance secreted from within sperm whales to protect their digestive systems against sharp objects has been prized by perfume-makers. The reason they like using ambergris in perfume is because that is what stops the smell from dissipating quickly. When the whales vomit, the ambergris from inside the whale reacts with the salt-water and solidifies into chunks that wash up a shore and get sold at nearly $10,000 a kilo. Scientists have been searching for an alternative since ambergris itself is expensive and excessive demand of it can lead to whale hunting.

Apple's new iPad facing 3G connectivity issues

Apple's new iPad facing 3G connectivity issues

It seems that Apple's new iPad just can't catch a break. When it was first launched, it was met with users complaining about heat issues, then it was issues regarding its battery, then it was users complaining that the new iPad's WiFi signals are weaker than its predecessors. While those are legit questions and issues brought up by users, it certainly feels like Apple has a lot to answer for, and adding to that list is a growing number of complaints by users who claim that the new iPad has difficulty hooking onto 3G networks. According to users, the new iPad will lose its 3G connection once in a while and will not reconnect.

Sony's latest Android smartphones are definitely a step up from what Sony Ericsson used to offer. And although Sony touts its Reality displays as some of the best on the market, it still wants to improve things in this department. And that's why it plans to introduce handsets with AMOLED displays (as you may already know, all current Sony and Sony Ericsson devices have LCD screens). According to China Times, Taiwan-based AU Optronics is making AMOLED displays that will be used by Sony for a new Xperia smartphone. The smartphone, which doesn't have a name yet, is set to debut in the second half of the year.

Google's tablet delayed until July, could see a lower price tag [Rumor]

While there has been no official word surrounding the Google tablet just yet regarding its price, specs, and release date, sources have told The Verge that instead of the previously rumored May release, we could be seeing it pushed back to July instead. The reason behind the delay. Well if the sources are to be believed, the reason for the delay is because Google wants to make some design changes in the hopes that it could see its rumored $249 price tag drop even further.

Drug-smuggling Nanoparticles Target Tumors

Drug-smuggling Nanoparticles Target Tumors

In the fight against cancer, it seems that drug-smuggling nanoparticles could play a part. From early stages of trials that are being conducted showed that cancer drugs that were couriered by nanoparticles may reduce the size of tumors in humans. Researches from BIND Biosciences in Boston filled nanoparticles with a cancer drug called Docetaxel and injected them into the blood of 17 people who had cancers that are normally resistant to that particular drug. Forty two days after the drug was injected, two of the volunteers' tumors had shrunk significantly while the tumors in the others had not grown.

We have waxed lyrical about the Galaxy Tab 7.7's Super AMOLED Plus delights - twice. Color us not entirely shocked, then, to see that Samsung's proudly tore apart the Korean LTE variant for component-obsessed fans. Some Korea-only features include a DMB TV antenna just below the 1280 x 800 display, while a magnesium cover above that keeps the thickness and weight down. Conversely, however, the border of the rear cover was increased by 0.1mm to defend the touchpanel against scratches and ensure that the rear camera doesn't stick out too much.

Facebook friend request rejection just as painful in real life

Facebook friend request rejection just as painful in real life

It is rather sad that the day has arrived where we quantify our lives through the number of friends whom we have on our social network. Psychologists claim that to have a Facebook friend request turned down offers a similar emotional smarting as that of being rejected in real life, resulting in those rejected to feel ‘withdrawn' and ‘numb', at least according to a study of 77 college students in chat scenarios. I say, why not expand that study to include a wider spectrum of test subjects instead of students who were brought up in a digital world, and have not discovered the joys of actual, face to face conversation.

When a device like the new iPad is manufactured in the millions, you know for sure that there are bound to be a few bad apples (pun not intended) out of the entire barrel. Well, it seems that John Pope has discovered a bright spot on his new iPad's display, right smack near the lower right hand corner. To better describe what a bright spot is, it is actually an area of the LCD display which illuminates itself more brightly compared to the rest of the pixels around, and can be seen better on light backgrounds compared to darker ones (which is pure logic speaking here).

Combined with Honeycomb, this means that as of March 2nd, just 6.2% of Android devices are now running a modern version of Android. Meanwhile, the bulk of Android devices run the 15-month-old Gingerbread operating system (63.7%) and the second most popular version of the platform is the 23-month-old Froyo OS (23.1%).
