Microsoft CEO: 500,000 Windows 8 downloads in less than 12 hours

Did you download Microsoft's latest Windows 8 developer preview ISO. Microsoft made available the preview few days ago at their BUILD conference, and well according to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer himself, who took to the stage at Build, the download managed to hit about 500,000 downloads in the first 12 hours. That sounded about right.

Intel's upcoming Ivy Bridge will put Sandy Bridge to shame?

Intel reps just can't resist whispering about their 2012 Core i-series. AnandTech is reporting a claimed 60 percent boost in 3DMark Vantage scores from the next-gen integrated graphics compared to Sandy Bridge, which could well put an end to Intel's frame-rate humiliation at the hands of AMD's A-series APUs. The bragging also extended to Quick Sync, which is “privately” said to deliver video encoding at twice the current speed.

The Intel Developer Forum showcases the near-threshold voltage processor. Photo: Intel. Researchers at Intel debuted an experimental processor at the company's developer forum this week, which could lead to devices with significantly lower energy consumption.
The chip — codenamed “Claremont” — is known as a near-threshold voltage processor, which allows transistors to operate at super-low, near “threshold” voltages to increase efficiency and decrease energy consumption.

Verizon's Samsung Stratosphere to arrive at RadioShack on October 6, HTC Vigor on October 20

The upcoming Samsung Stratosphere for Verizon was first leaked last month alongside the HTC Vigor. The Stratosphere is going to be a decently-specced (but not high-end) Android-powered smartphone with a side-sliding QWERTY keyboard and 4G LTE support. It will in fact be Verizon's first LTE slider. The Stratosphere was pictured once before, and it even passed through the FCC already, so you know its launch has to be near.

Opel RAK e electric concept looks to the future of low-cost urban motoring

Before we delve into the details of the RAK e electric concept, let's step back in time with a brief historical primer. The oldest industrial division within General Motors' current portfolio, Opel started as a sewing machine manufacturer way back in 1862. Evolving to the production of bicycles soon after, Opel's presence in wheeled transportation turned to automobiles in 1899. Now, at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, Opel looks to the future with its debut of the ultra-modern RAK e Concept. Back in 1928, Opel captivated the media with its experimental rocket-powered RAK 2.

As Twitter's Influence on TweetDeck Becomes Clear in Latest Update, Users Seek More Options

If you didn't hear the news way back when, Twitter bought TweetDeck. We didn't know what this meant, initially – they've bought third-party Twitter developers before and we saw them merge those people into their software team. For TweetDeck, their existence (at least in the way we once knew it) wasn't wiped off the face of the internet. Users are starting to feel the effects of the acquisition, however, as recent TweetDeck updates have been to transform the client into a way Twitter sees most fitting for their service.

LG LU6200 with HD display, Android and LTE coming soon

LG is getting ready to launch its first smartphone to feature an HD (1280 x 720) display: the LG LU6200. Expected to be released in South Korea on September 26, the LU6200 seems to be LG's next flagship smartphone. The HD screen (4.5 inches) is obviously not the only high-end feature of the handset, as it also comes with LTE connectivity, 1GB of RAM, a dual-core 1.5GHz processor, NFC, Wi-Fi, 8MP rear camera, 1.3MP front-facing camera, and a 1,830 mAh battery.
The LU6200 is 10.5mm thin, and runs Android – most probably Gingerbread.

The LU6200 could be the Korea-only version of the LG P930, which we've discovered back in May.

If you thought that fake Apple stores were limited to China, you would be wrong as not too long ago fake stores were discovered in the US. Two such stores in Queens were accused of trademark infringement and in the latest development of the case, they have been ordered to hand over all products to Apple. To be more specific, the products that the stores have to return need are ones that bear either the word "Apple" or any of the ubiquitous trademarks, such as the phrase "Designed by Apple in California.

But it does now feel like there's some progress being made towards this tablet's release. In the US of A, Best Buy has started taking pre-orders for the Galaxy Tab 10.1′s smaller sibling. Unfortunately the retailer doesn't list any prospective launch date, so it's still anyone's guess if we'll see this tablet in stores and in consumers' hands this year or not. Skype 5.4 Beta for OS X features Facebook integration

Skype introduced Facebook integration in its IM/VoIP client not too long ago, but it was only available for Windows users, which meant that Mac users didn't get the chance to use Facebook from within Skype itself. Starting today though, that has all changed. With Skype for Mac 5.4 Beta, Mac users will get the same Facebook integration that is found in Skype 5.5 for Windows. This means that Mac users can now IM and connect with Facebook friends without having to launch a separate program. Users can also access the News Feed, comment and “like” posts as well.

It comes with a 1.4GHz dual core processor and runs on the Android 2.3 Gingerbread OS. As an in-between device, it comes with a 5.3 inch large, HD Super AMOLED touchscreen.

But what makes the Samsung Galaxy Note interesting is that it comes with TouchWix and Live Panel UX.

Fenix TK70 Flashlight Review

I have reviewed many fancy flashlights on The Gadgeteer, most of them relatively small, compact and for their size, pretty bright. Well, this time I am reviewing the Fenix TK70 courtesy of Fenix Outfitters. The TK70 is neither small nor lightweight but is supposed to be brighter than all my other flashlights combined….car light on high beam bright  . Along with the LED head, two body components and end cap, Fenix includes a lanyard, handle strap, and extra o-rings.

The pieces of the TK70 screw together very much like the lightsabers the Gadgeteer Kid and I built/reviewed a few years ago.

2013 Lexus GS 450h does the electric slide

2013 Lexus GS 450h does the electric slide

What might the 2013 Lexus GS 450h add to the additional performance goodness delivered in the 2012 Lexus GS 350. More power and more fuel efficiency, for starters. The second-gen hybrid system boots out 338 total horsepower for a 5.6-second sprint to 60 mph. That's 32 hp more than the GS 350 and a 0.1-second improvement on the stoplight run. Fuel economy gets an "expected" 30 percent improvement – the quotes meaning the sedan's fuel use hasn't been officially certified, but anything in that ballpark will be a tremendous gain.

Today Nokia announced through its Twitter account that it has started shipping its 700 and 701 smartphones. Those are the first handsets to run the Belle revision of Symbian and will, the Finns hope, put the start of the fightback. Despite the very similar naming, Nokia 700 and Nokia 701 are quite different in terms of hardware. The 700 is a super slim and compact smartphone with a 3.2" AMOLED, whereas the 701 comes with a 3.5" IPS LCD (which we found to be the brightest display around) and a larger and heavier body.

What those two have in common is the 1GHz processors, which give them identical performance.

Apple patent sounds like the Xbox Kinect

Apple patent sounds like the Xbox Kinect

The concepts of the various technology seen in the movie Minority Report seem to be rather popular, and given the rate at which technology is progressing, it's only a matter of time before we see it being made into reality, and based on a recent Apple patent, it looks like perhaps that future may not be as far off as we think. However it seems that some are thinking that the patent sounds more like Microsoft's Xbox's Kinect rather than Minority Report, since the patent describes a projector with a scanning beam that picks up the user's movements via a receiver, which would be a secondary device, much like the Kinect.
