SmartDock for Sony Xperia P cancelled?

We mentioned a few months ago that the Sony Xperia P will be on the receiving end of a SmartDock docking station, and while I hate to be the harbinger of bad news, here we are with word that the SmartDock has been cancelled. Just what is the SmartDock. It is a docking station for your Xperia P that comes with a HDMI outlet as well as a couple of USB ports that can be used to hook up your Sony Xperia P to a Full HD TV, enjoying whatever high definition movie files that you have stored on your smartphone prior.

Panasonic's UN-W700 runs Android, streams Blu-ray video, takes Skype calls, isn't a tablet

We've seen Android used for home theater purposes before, but it's been rare that a company has wanted Google's OS used almost exclusively with that purpose in mind. Panasonic is gambling that its UN-W700 can use Android (2.3, unfortunately) for an all-singing, all-dancing compact video device. The 7-inch, 800x480 standee plays media from its SDXC card slot or over DLNA, including recordings normally destined for Blu-ray from one of Panasonic's Diga set-top boxes.

Microsoft SkyDrive updated for Windows and Mac

The cloud does seem to be the place to be these days, and Microsoft certainly knows it. In fact, Microsoft has announced updates for their SkyDrive service which will target both Mac and Windows platforms. A new feature for Windows 8 Release Preview that is due early next month (next month, by the way, starts tomorrow, so it is shorter than it sounds) has been tested, where this will enable one to retrieve photos from just about any computer or machine that has SkyDrive installed. This will happen even if your cloud storage space is already at its maximum, although for most of us, chances are we have yet to maximize our 150,000 file limit.

We sure hope you like surprises, because we've got a good one for you. It seems as if MSI wasn't quite pleased with the killer graphics on its feature-loaded GT70 laptop and decided to give it a quick boost. Earlier today, the outfit announced its fresh gaming machine will now ship with NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 675M GPU instead of that already powerful GTX 670M found in our review unit. MSI says the change was driven by the company's beliefs that "exceptional performance starts with outstanding components," and, needless to say, we're certain you'd agree.

Google Drive to get offline mode in five weeks

D10, All Things D and Wall Street Journal's technology summit, is being wrapped up in California and it didn't bow out with its share of interesting Android-related news. Walt Mossberg interviewed Google's Senior Vice President of Chrome Sundar Pichai, and he let loose an interesting little piece of information when asked a question about Chrome. He mentioned Google Drive would be getting offline mode in five months. He didn't go into much detail, of course, but I think we all have an idea of how that'll work. We'll hopefully see demos of this at Google I/O June 27th-29th with a public release to follow soon after.

Bio-chemical circuits may make you a man of a machine

You'd be more than forgiven for not knowing who Klas Tybrandt is. The doctoral student at Linköping University is hardly a household name, but his latest creation may garner him some serious attention. The Swedish scientist has combined special transistors he developed into an integrated circuit capable of transmitting positive and negative ions as well as biomolecules. The advantage here is that, instead of simply controlling electronics, the circuits carry chemicals which can have a variety of functions, such as acetylcholine which the human body uses to transmit signals between cells.

ZTE Athena appears in spy shots, squeezes ICS in 6.2mm package

Some posts on social network Weibo point to an ultra-thin Android phone from ZTE in the works, codenamed Athena. The device readily beats the Motorola DROID RAZR (7.1mm) and the Huawei Ascend P1 S (6.7mm), having a profile of just 6.2mm. You'll also notice the Kevlar back of the Athena that is visible in one of the leaked photos. The ZTE Athena should also surpass those two in processing power with its (presumably dual-core) Cortex-A15 CPU. The phone will be running Android 4.0 ICS with a custom "Miflavor UI" skin on top.

Laser knows just how much vegetables you have eaten

Popeye the Sailorman cannot stress enough just how important it is to have your fair share of vegetables in your diet, and exasperated parents over the years did try different methods in making vegetables more appealing, but seemingly to no avail. Here is a tool from the researchers at Yale University and the University of Utah who might help parents monitor the amount of vegetable intake in their scions. Coming in the form of a handheld laser device, all you need to do is point it at the palm on your child for 30 seconds, before dispensing praise or a stern word of warning.

As we get closer to Google I/O, more details are being revealed on Project Glass (sometimes called Google Glass) from Googlers who have been surprisingly chatty regarding the latest project to come out of Google's mysterious X labs. Yesterday, we showed you guys a video of Sergey Brin talking with talk show host Gavin Newsom on the set of his show for Current TV, where Sergey even let a doubting Mr. Newsom take the specs for a quick test run. Today, Google's Product Lead, Steve Lee, spills a few more beans on Google Glass in part 1 of an interview with Fast Company.

OmniVision's 12.7-megapixel OV12830 can shoot 24 fps photo bursts from your smartphone

OmniVision has been on a bit of a tear introducing new mobile camera sensors this week, and its newest could well have the biggest impact on smartphones in the next year. The OV12830's 12.7 megapixels don't make it as dense as the 16-megapixel sensors we've seen, but it makes up for that with some mighty fast still photography. As long as the attached phone can handle it, the CMOS sensor can snap full-resolution photos at 24 frames per second, or the kind of relentless shooting speed that would make One X and Galaxy S III fans happy. The same briskness musters 1080p video at 60 fps, even with stabilization thrown in.

Remember the first generation iPad that we talked about recently, which sported a couple of dock connectors since it was a prototype model. Well, someone in the US must have felt that it was worth $10,200 over eBay, which is a huge leap from the sub-$5,000 price point that it stood at when we first ran the story the other day. I guess there is always a price for everything, and this being an Apple product, it is no doubt a high profile device that deserves one's attention.

Archos Arnova 80 Cobalt sidles up to the FCC, leaves little to the imagination

Archos' line of Android tablets aren't really known for setting consumer tongues a-wagging; those honors are typically reserved for more bold-faced OEMs. As a low-cost alternative to pricier offerings, however, they make mighty fine sense. And one such slate's just swung by the Commission's gates, showing off its shiny black posterior, FCC ID (SOVAC80CO) and Arnova branding. The 80 Cobalt, as its referred to in the docs, appears to be a WiFi-only affair in keeping with its market positioning and, judging from its measurements, is likely to join the ranks of other 8-inch tabs.

BMW may be the sponsor of this year's Concorso d'Eleganza Villa d'Este, but it was Alfa Romeo that cleaned up when the awards were handed out over the weekend. Top honors went to a pristine 1933 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GS with coachwork by Figoni. The Series XI coupe that could easily be mistaken for a Bugatti of the same era was initially shown at the Paris Auto Salon in 1933 and has gone on to appear at numerous concours around the world. At Villa d'Este, it won not only the Best of Show awards – both those selected by the jury and voted on by the public – but also the prestigious Coppa d'Oro (Gold Cup).

One of the more unusual specs offers some corroboration: the Adreno 320 graphics, which only come in the souped-up Pro or quad-core variants of Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon S4 chipset.

Smile, you're on Candid Camera. That was quite the catchphrase many years ago back when I was just a wee lad, and I would dare say that the smiles (most of the time, they end up as laughs) featured in the TV series were genuine if this particular computer system from the bowels of MIT were to analyze them. After all, the folks over at MIT have managed to come up with a particular algorithm that is capable of detecting whether a particular smile is one that is born from the bottom of the heart, while another is forced out due to frustration.

Seeing your cellphone die is one of the worst things that can happen to you, especially if you were really close to it. It happened to me recently, on a day that seemed like just any other. It’s ridiculously hot, with the temperature well over 40 degrees centigrade (over 104 degree Fahrenheit), and I’m sweating profusely while returning from college. After spending some time on a call, I notice that the device is heating up, and the screen’s pretty wet. I just wiped it with a tissue, and on reaching home saw the battery’s dead. That was expected, as I never got to juice it up before leaving.
