Samsung Galaxy Nexus for Verizon LTE hands-on (video)

Samsung Galaxy Nexus for Verizon LTE hands-on (video)

New Yorkers got a sneak peak at the Verizon LTE flavor of the Galaxy Nexus at the Samsung Experience in Columbus Circle today, and we dropped by to spend a few minutes with the Ice Cream Sandwich handset in the Manhattan showroom. Samsung had just four pre-production Nexus models on hand, which were running Android 4.0.1 - not the final 4.1 version we're expecting to see shortly, with a baseband update in tow. None of the samples included SIM cards, so we were only able to test them using the built-in WiFi module.

Android Design Preview simplifies app mockups, developers' lives (video)

A new Java utility should help Android developers and designers who need to rapidly prototype application layouts. The appropriately named Android Design Preview mirrors part of your desktop on an Android device over USB - just select area on your computer screen and it'll show up remotely using the Android Debug Bridge. It's more lightweight than a VNC app and doesn't require a lot of mucking with settings, whether you're coding on Windows, Mac OS X or Linux.

Ferrari unveils a meaner 599XX Evoluzione

Ferrari unveils a meaner 599XX Evoluzione

An outfit like Ferrari keeps a tight product portfolio. Four model lines in all, when it comes down to production models. Even with the various derivatives that follow, that still doesn't amount to a large number of new debuts from year to year. But as a racing team first and an automaker second, it rolls out a new vehicle at least once a year. What falls between, then, bridges the gap.

What comes in between a road car and an F1 car, you ask? With a rapidly escalation level of crossover in technologies, less and less.

Motorola XOOM updated to support Pay As You Go

If you're tired of paying monthly fees for 4G connectivity and wish you had the option to just pay for data only when you want to use it - you're in luck. Motorola and Verizon have just rolled out a new update for the Motorola XOOM Android tablet which does just that. The new software update adds the ability for customers to purchase no-contract 4G data on a month-to-month basis. The Google Setup Wizard has also been updated to improve the reliability of Pay As You Go detection on the tablet's first power up.
Other than the Pay As You Go support, it looks like there aren't any additional changes to the tablet.

Flight simulator uses robot arm for greater degree of realism

Flight simulators are great tools when it comes to training pilots to perform their job flawlessly each time without having to risk crashing a real jet, not to mention the potential loss of life and belongings. Well, military pilots undergo even more strenous training compared to commercial airline pilots, as dogfights will involve a slew of movements in the plane which could prove to be too stressful for the ordinary Joe.

MobilFun Gives Us a First Look at Galaxy Nexus Docks

Those dock connectors on the sides of the Galaxy Nexus looked promising, but ever since the device was revealed we really haven't gotten much of a clue as to what kind of docks or other accessories we'd be able to use.  . Retailer MobilFun has revealed a smorgasbord of images and videos showcasing the docks. We have horizontal and vertical desktop docks, HDMI docks and vehicle docks to sink our teeth into and even a holder that has an extra battery compartment that will charge your Galaxy Nexus while it's on.

They all look pretty good, too.

IO Interactive to begin new franchise after Hitman: Absolution

Agent 47 and his magical murder adventures may be what IO Interactive's best known for, but that's hardly the only number on the developer's calling card. Most recently, IO gave the Hitman franchise a break in favor of Kane & Lynch. And sure, it wasn't everybody's cup of tea, but it was definitely different. Never one to tread water, IO plans on taking a similar approach after Hitman: Absolution.

Once in a while, a device will be released that makes you wonder just what niche does it fall under. The $50 EFO iPazzPort is one of those devices, where it will feature a microphone as well as a speaker in its handheld keyboard and touchpad, letting you send emails and use said device as a Skype handset. Daihatsu FC ShowCase concept: who doesn't want a 60-inch TV in a van?

Daihatsu FC ShowCase concept: who doesn't want a 60-inch TV in a van?

Here's a funny one from the Tokyo Motor Show. Daihatsu's squarish concept EV van, dubbed the FC ShowCase, is basically a spacious four-seater packing plenty of goodies: a giant wing door, some blue lights on the wheels, an LED panel on the left skirt, side-view cameras instead of mirrors, a funky touch panel steering wheel, a small heads-up display and a 60-inch TV. And no, this isn't a mod from Pimp My Ride. According to one of the designers, the idea here is that the FC ShowCase acts as a mobile theater, which can keep travellers entertained while camping or fishing.

Nexus One receives Ice Cream Sandwich with CM9

It looks like HTC phones sure are on a roll when it comes to getting the latest Android updates. Previously we reported about the HD2 and the G1 receiving Ice Cream Sandwich, and now we have another phone to add to the mix: the original Google flagship device aka the Nexus One. The CyanogenMod team have been hard at work porting Android 4.0 over to the phone, and it looks like they're on the right track. Despite being an early build without hardware acceleration, Ice Cream Sandwich appears to be running pretty well on the device.

VIA Technologies is celebrating the 10th birthday of Mini-ITX, a small motherboard (and case) form factor whose first reference design was created by Robert Kuo, Assistant Vice President, VIA Technologies. The idea was to build a 17x17cm PC motherboard that could spark a new wave of computer industrial design – and it did. The new small form factor has enabled all kinds of PC “mods” (modifications) allowing PCs to go everywhere (cars, scooters, robots…) and look like anything (vintage radio R2D2, millennium falcon – you name it!).

Kindle Fire gets first taste of CM7

Kindle Fire gets first taste of CM7

Well, with source code and root firmly in hand, it was only a matter of time before someone got a custom ROM up and running on the Fire. Of course, the first contestant for your hacked Kindle dollar is the reliable, and damn-near ubiquitous CM7. XDA Developers Forum member JackpotClavin posted a pair of images showing the Gingerbread-based ROM booted up on his 7-inch Amazon tablet. He isn't offering the code for download yet, primarily because there are still a host of bugs to work out — including a severely mixed up touch panel thats about 90-degrees out of sync with actual display.

Never one to stay behind the curve as far as technology is concerned, China is all set to receive their own taste of Ice Cream Sandwich with thanks to this mysterious tablet running Android 4.0.1. The 10-inch tab — which is apparently a Xoom knockoff (I don't see it) — runs Android 4.0 surprisingly well, thanks mostly in part to its (can we start calling it last generation yet?) Nvidia Tegra 2 dual-core processor. The rest of the hardware isn't too shabby either with 1GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, a pair of cameras, GPS, HMDMI and a 3G SIM card slot. Pretty much the whole shibang.

What do people look at on your Facebook profile?

If you've ever wondered what people look at when they visit your profile on social networks like Facebook, we've got some answers for you. The folks over at the EyeTrackShop recently performed an interesting study on a group of 30 participants. Using webcams that were set up to monitor the eye movements of the people in front of the computers, they recorded what each user was looking at every 10 seconds. And judging by the results of the study, there are some interesting things to note.

I know that there are plenty of Angry Birds fans out there, otherwise, how else can you explain the phenomenon of flinging a pissed off avian friend towards certain doom just to perform a kamikaze dive in the general direction of green pigs. Well, I suppose Rovio is far from finished when it comes to milking this cash, er, bird to the maximum, hence their latest attempt at commercialization has resulted in a cookbook. Yes sir, Rovio just rolled out a cookbook that they call “Angry Birds: Bad Piggies' Egg Recipes.”.

At last, Sony users can get in on the wireless flash-triggering game. That Sony Alpha camera seemed like a good idea when you bought it, but then you discovered that you entered a world of Memory Sticks and weirdly-sized flash hotshoes. We can't help you with the first (although at least you have an alternative SD/CF slot), but Phottix can certainly help with the second, bringing remote off-camera flash triggers to the Sony system. Better still, they're at the less expensive end of flash-triggering gear.

Nissan sells more than 20,000 Leafs in first year, high-fives commence on Tokyo Motor Show floor

You win this round, hippies. Only a few months after announcing that it sold 10,000 all-electric Leaf cars in international markets, Nissan stated at the Tokyo Motor Show today that the company has sold over 20,000 Leafs since the car went on sale in December of 2010. Of the 9,000 Leafs that have been sold to U.S. owners, over 60 percent went to homes in California, where owners no doubt admire their electric cars while enjoying their tasty organic kale and starfruit smoothies. The company also added that it expects to sell more than 10,000 Leafs in the U.S. by the end of 2011, which dovetails perfectly into their predictions.
