Kia avoids costly strike in Korea

Kia has navigated around a potential strike by organized labor in Korea. According to Automotive News, the manufacturer joined GM Korea and Ssangyong Motor Company in reaching agreements with the companies' workers for better pay, pending a "yea" vote by employees. Kia workers successfully negotiated a 5.2 percent wage increase as well as bonus pay worth over $6,600 at current conversion rates. In addition, each worker will be granted 80 shares in the company. GM Korea, meanwhile agreed to give its employees a 4.7 percent wage increase as well as record-level bonuses.

If the South Rises Again, They Will Have Android in their Pockets

With nearly every analytics firm offering their own take on platform leaders in the US smartphone market, Mobile ad agency Jumptap has turned their attention in a slightly different direction. Most surveys will tell you Android holds a confident lead as the top platform in the nation, but just how does that lead breakdown across the states. The results are somewhat surprising. Android held a dominant lead in the southern and southwestern states, while iOS was the platform of choice for those in the northeast and mid-west.

NASA's solar-powered Juno mission heads to Jupiter today, Orbiter finds water on Mars? (video)

NASA's Juno mission has been beset by delays for a while now, but the solar-powered excursion is finally scheduled to take off for Jupiter today, in the hopes of making history. Throughout the course of its five-year journey, the "armored tank" spacecraft will be powered exclusively by a trio of solar panels, each measuring nine feet wide and 30 feet long. Close to Earth, these panels will be able to generate 14 kilowatts of electricity, but as Juno ventures deeper into space, they'll crank out only 400 watts.

Hackers break into Subaru Outback via text message

We've already seen SCADA systems controlled by Google Search, and now the Black Hat Technical Security Conference is offering up yet another slice of cringe-inducing hacker pie. A pair of pros from iSec Partners security firm was able to unlock and start the engine of a Subaru Outback using an Android phone and a process they call war texting. By setting up their own GSM network, they were able to snatch up password authentication messages being sent from server to car, allowing them the option to ride off in a brand new crossover.

Depth of Speed's Josh Clason teaming up with eGarage

Josh Clason (he of the Depth of Speed series) is teaming up with eGarage. Two great flavors that will certainly taste great together. Clason and eGarage plan to bring us plenty of visual automotive delight, and the duo have just realized a teaser clip of what's in store. Verbally, the pair are mum on what's coming up. The teaser video, however, speaks volumes. We've seen the JDM Legends machines before, but the rest of the video takes on everything from rat rods and lead sleds to modern high-horsepower Bentley coupes. Click past the jump to watch the video.
One warning for the easily offended; there is a brief swear shown on screen.

An Introduction to UTS Watches

An Introduction to UTS Watches

TweetEmail. UTS watches are made exclusively in-house with the exception of the movement which is sourced from ETA in 3-hand, GMT and chronograph varieties. Their cases are milled from solid blocks of stainless steel and the finished watch is then hand assembled and tested before ever making it to a client's wrist. UTS seems pretty serious about quality control and operating under the finest of tolerances. Our favourite thing about these German watches is their unified styling which is seen woven into all of their models.

Imperium Bentley Continental GT is a maroon menace

Imperium Bentley Continental GT is a maroon menace

Buying an exotic luxury car can be an exciting process. You're not likely to run into other examples of your high-end machine on the street on a daily basis. Still, other examples do exist, and there will come a day when your rare ride meets its equal. Outfits exist to make sure that doesn't happen, one of which has taken a customer's Bentley Continental GT and transformed it into a bespoke one-of-one super coupe. The company is called Imperium, and it's turned up the exclusivity knob on this particular Bentley. Carbon fiber body panels have been shaped to replace the old metal ones, and new subtly aggressive features are achieved.

DirecTV interested in purchasing Hulu?

We all know that Hulu, one of the web's premium internet streaming services, has recently been put up for sale by its stakeholders - Fox, NBC and Disney. And joining the list of potential acquirers (Apple, Yahoo, Google, Verizon, AT&T and Amazon) is DirecTV, a direct broadcast satellite service provider and broadcaster. At yesterday's earnings call, Mike White, the CEO of DirecTV, admitted that the notion of owning Hulu is certainly a possibility but the company is still determining whether it makes sense to make the purchase or not.

RotoSub comes up with silent cooling fans

I'm sure most of us have experienced how noisy our computer fans can get at times. Usually we don't notice when the fans get really loud but the minute they stop, it suddenly feels so quiet. Although there are times when the fans are whirring so loudly that you start to get a bit worried for your computer.

Multi-Tasking On Windows Phone Detailed, and It’s a HTC!

Multi-Tasking On Windows Phone Detailed, and It’s a HTC!

There's been a lot of talk about how multi-tasking on Windows Phone "Mango" might be implemented, and basically it will rely on background tasks. The ability for apps to run when they are in the background, or even under the lock screen. Ultimately if an app is coded correctly it can run, while other apps are in focus, and resume as if it had never been in the background at all. Leaving a seamless transition from what you are looking at now, to tapping and holding the back arrow and picking from one of the recent apps you have been using in the app scroll. Apps have to have background tasks enabled though.

How to build a Ferrari 458 Italia engine

How to build a Ferrari 458 Italia engine

Generally speaking, we prefer driving cars to building them. Still, you can't do the former if the latter isn't taken care of. And since one of the cars at the top of our "must drive" list is the Ferrari 458 Italia, naturally we're curious to see what it takes to put one together. Thankfully for us, then, Ferrari brought a video crew into its Maranello, Italy factory, and we're gifted a first-hand view of an engine coming to life. The Prancing Horse's 4.5-liter V8 produces 562 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque. That's enough energy to move the 458 Italia from 0-62 miles per hour in around 3.4 seconds.

Has Your T-Mobile Android Been Experiencing Poor Battery Life Recently? You May Not Be Alone

If you have an Android device on T-Mobile and your battery life is suddenly not what it once used to be, there may be a bigger issue at hand. A recent posting on the T-Mobile support forums is addressing the issue, which apparently arose around July 28th and seems to mostly be affecting HTC handsets, particularly the G2. While the support team says it is working to resolve the issue, they are seeking user input to better diagnose the issue.

Pandigital Planet and Star adds more tablet oomph

Pandigital is not quite finished yet when it comes to their latest tablet collection, where apart from the Planet and the Star, we do know they have another model in the pipeline which has yet to be announced until this September. Something tells me that this fourth tablet is going to take the same naming convention as the previous three, which has something to do with outer space – although you can bet your bottom dollar that Galaxy will not be used. Let us check out just what the Pandigital Planet and Star has in store for the masses.

A little out of topic since Smart Modular is not a Japanese company, but I could not resist this and sharing it with you. Jerrycan Gas Can speakers are a novelty

Jerrycan Gas Can speakers are a novelty

Audiophiles can probably appreciate how some speakers or headphones are handcrafted, meaning that the wiring, the fitting, the soldering, etc are all done by hand as opposed to being churned out by a huge machine. With these Jerrycan Gas Can Speakers they are pretty much made by hand as well, although we're not sure if the somewhat premium asking price is worth it. Made out of jerrycans (hence the name), these speakers will set you back £285 which is roughly converted to $470.

Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring, in pixels. Once you have picked a picture, you need to put the thing up on the wall. Ixxi consists of plastic-coated “tiles” that are joined together with snap-on x-section clips (with simple i-shaped clips for the edges). These clips then stick in turn to “powerstrips,” essentially double-sided tape that sticks to the wall.

SnapDragon Gets New Naming Scheme

SnapDragon Gets New Naming Scheme

Those who have an interest for the systems on a chip (or SoCs) that power smartphones and tablets know what Qualcomm's SnapDragon is. However,  keeping track of the differences between the SnapDragon MSM8655T and MSM8560 may require a bit more memory, or research. Actually, even people working at Qualcomm have to pause for a couple of seconds to get things straight in their mind sometime. Qualcomm intends to change this and the SnapDragon family will now be divided into three sub-category: Snapdragon S1, S2 and S3.
