[CES 2012] A mirage can be a very dangerous thing in the desert, but out here in Las Vegas, this is one mirage that I do not mind seeing materialize in the real world – a holographic iPad. This illusion from InnoVision of Taiwan relies on a glass cage enclosure to project a hologram above any device, where their in-house technology would in turn let you view 2D videos as though they were 3D holograms.

Intel reveals its first Medfield phone, the Lenovo K800

We've been quite patient in waiting for the first of Intel's smartphones to come to fruition, and it seems all the waiting has finally paid off. Today during its CES 2012 keynote, Intel announced the first Medfield-based smartphone in the form of the Lenovo K800. Featuring the low-power Intel Atom Z2460 with Hyper-Threading Technology and support for HSPA+, the K800 packs a 4.5-inch 720p display and Android 4.0. On top of Ice Cream Sandwich, the device will also have the Lenovo LeOS user interface for a localized experience in China when it launches in the second quarter.

[CES 2012] PrimeSense, the folks behind the Xbox 360′s Kinect, must have figured out a Blue Ocean strategy and decided to expand the motion control market for video games by teaming up with Asus, releasing the Wavi Xtion at CES this year in the process. To summarize, the Xtion is actually the sum of a few parts, sporting a PrimeSense 3D depth camera that was specially developed for PC use, and can hook up to a an Asus Wavi box. Having done that, it will wirelessly stream data to your computer over a 5GHz band.

Thousands line up for iPhone 4S launch in China

. In eight hours, Apple's iPhone will touch down in China for the first official time. Thousands have already lined up outside of Apple Stores, and in Beijing and Shanghai locations, there are hundreds of people waiting in the hopes of getting their hands on the iPhone 4S. The image above was posted on Twitter on January 10th, three days before the highly-anticipated smartphone's launch. China Unicom is the only carrier set to offer the iPhone 4S, with both the 16GB and 32GB models free with a two and three-year agreements.

Sprint LG Viper 4G LTE specs leaked by internal document

A couple of days ago, Sprint hastily unveiled that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and LG Viper were headed its way, both with 4G LTE support in tow (in fact these will be the first smartphones to support Sprint's nascent LTE network). And while the carrier did go through some of the specs of the Viper, today we have something much better – the full specsheet has leaked courtesy of a Sprint internal document sent to SprintFeed. Since the official unveiling was the first time we heard anything about the LG Viper 4G LTE, this is welcome news.

One nagging issue with electric vehicles is range. While today's lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are much better than yesterday's nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) batteries, they still don't offer enough energy storage to take an EV much further than 100 miles without a lengthy recharge. Even if the Li-ion batteries were up to the challenge, there is still the awkward problem of where to pack 1,000 pounds (or more) of bulky storage cells into a vehicle's chassis. IBM thinks it has a solution with a promising new lithium-air (Li-air) battery.

Good technology needs to be incorporated as well, and the IVI concept that you see above (and in the picture gallery after the jump) stands for In Vehicle Infotainment concept, sporting a 10.1″ display that is located on top of the dashboard, while there is a brother to keep it company – a 11.6″ widescreen located within the console area.

Intel's Medfield series processor debuts on the Lenovo K800

Intel has been trying to get into the smartphone segment for a long time now but they have finally managed to do it with the Lenovo K800, which will be the first smartphone to hit the market running on Intel's 32nm Medfield platform. The K800 is running on the Penwell SoC that has a 1.6GHz Intel Atom Z2460 CPU with 512MB L2 cache. On the GPU side it has the tried and tested PowerVR SGX 540 which has been clocked at a slightly higher than usual 400MHz and dual-channel LPDDR2 memory.

[CES 2012] The Sony Android Walkman was first shown at IFA as a prototype and officially announced on September 13th, when it launched in Japan. Today at CES, Sony is officially launching the Walkman Z series running Android 2.3 (GingerBread) in the US in three flavors: the 32G model at $329.99, the 16G model at $279.99 and the 8G at $249.99. On the hardware side, the device boasts a 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor that enables 1080p video playback at up to 10 MBps, which the 4.3" WVGA-800×480 multi-touch LCD will not render at full resolution, however, thanks to the HDMI out port, you will be able to play it on your HDTV.

LG Announces New Lineup of Google TV Smart TVs

LG has officially announced their lineup of Google TV-integrated smart TVs, the LMG860 and LMG620. The new HDTV sets actually employ both Google's Android-based internet TV solution and LG's own Smart TV setup, a combination that should allow for plenty of access to content and entertainment. While they don't match LG's other new TV offerings in terms of style, they do feature the latest passive-3D technology. It's a good sign that more manufacturers are putting faith in Google TV, even if LG wasn't content to base their new Smart TVs entirely on the platform alone.
