United Spent Money To Remove Safety Equipment From a Brand New 787 Jet

United Spent Money To Remove Safety Equipment From a Brand New 787 Jet

. The 787 wearing ANA colors.
When Boeing delivered its new 787 airplane to United Airlines back in September, it was a moment for celebration. However, the Air Line Pilots Association has a problem with last-minute changes to the jumbo jet. Apparently, a key piece of safety equipment was purposely left out. The piece in question is a safety gate that's designed to prevent bad guys from rushing the cockpit when the pilot goes to the bathroom. A well-placed cart can supposedly perform the same service, but it's still disconcerting that a planned safety feature was removed from a final production plane.

Nissan Brings A Subtle All-Arounder To The Toughest Block In Town. Creating a competitive new compact sedan in the US is perhaps the hardest chore that big automakers face today. Shoppers in this slice of the market really do require a single vehicle that will do just about everything for them: get great fuel economy, give a comfortable and confident ride, have a usable back seat with plenty of cargo space, offer an abundance of techy bells and whistles.

Apple publishes 'Samsung did not copy' statement through gritted teeth

Apple publishes 'Samsung did not copy' statement through gritted teeth

Whatever you think of the continual legal tussles between Apple and Samsung, a UK court's decision to force the former into publicly acknowledging that the latter did not copy its design will have seemed a little egregious even to the most ardent sammy-sympathiser. Well, that post is now live - on Apple's site at least - and as you might expect, is studiously manicured to almost not feel like an acknowledgement at all. The opening legalese notes that Samsung did not infringe "registered design No. 0000181607-0001," before going on to point out in perfect lay-terms the positive comments Judge Colin Birss made about its own slates.

New York Times website blocked in China after expose on Premier Wen Jiabao's wealth

I guess it was inevitable, although many would deem it to be silly and downright an admission of guilt, as China blocked the website of The New York Times after the paper revealed the kind of wealth that Premier Wen Jiabao and his family built throughout his tenure as a top government official. It seems that Wen's wife and relatives have raked up at the very minimum, a whopping $2.7 billion, where the majority of it was made while Wen was in still in power.

Samsung Galaxy Note II for Verizon hands-on

So far we've had the opportunity to review the global edition of the Samsung Galaxy Note II - as well as get our hands on three of the five variants known to be making their way to the US - but tonight we got our first official look at Verizon's particular flavor. Not that it's much different than the rest of the crowd: it's loaded with the same specs we've seen on the N7000 model (5.5-inch HD Super AMOLED display at 1,280 x 720, 3,100mAh battery and a quad-core Exynos processor clocked at 1.6GHz), with the exception of Verizon-specific LTE bands, and have the same button layout that we've come to expect.

CyanogenMod code fixed to prevent unlock gestures from being logged locally on handsets

If you're one of the root-and-ROM brigade, it's also likely that you have a keen eye on what goes on under the hood of your mobile OS. It might, then, come as a surprise to users of CyanogenMod, that a line of code could have been logging your phone-unlock gestures and patterns. Gabriel Castro, a developer involved in the project, was surprised to spot the rogue logging, that seems to have been part of an update regarding grid sizes for screen locks in August.

Dragon Go. has been given the elbow, with the slightly more professional sounding Dragon Mobile Assistant taking its place. Nuance has expanded on its predecessor's verbal commands, with new functionality for maps (you'll be able to bark direction requests at the new app and it'll plan the route), alongside a hands-free wake-up feature activated by saying "Hi Dragon" - we hope you have a high embarrassment threshold. Other Siri-esque features include weather updates and dictated SMS and email responses. The beta app can be downloaded from today, although compatibility is limited to Android Ice Cream Sandwich and above for now.

If you're a PC maker launching a new lineup of Windows 8 devices, you're going to look awfully square if you don't have at least one touch-enabled all-in-one to show off. Clearly, ASUS got the memo. Here at a press event in New York City, the company announced the ET2300, a 23-inch desktop whose display can be pushed down to lie basically flat - a pretty ubiquitous form factor these days. Starting with that IPS screen, it has 1080p resolution and promises horizontal viewing angles of 178 degrees. Under the hood, it runs your choice of Core i3, i5 or i7 processor, with either integrated Intel graphics or NVIDIA's GT 630M GPU.

Honda warns dealers to clear out 2012 Civic stock, 2013 emergency refresh on sale Nov. 29

Thanks to an anonymous tipster, Autoblog has learned that the so-called "emergency refresh" of the Honda Civic is just around the corner. In fact, the automaker is already urging its dealers to clear out remaining 2012 model year stock because "The changes made to the 2013 model will make the outgoing 2012 Civic a difficult model [to] sell when they are side to side." Those are the words of David Hendley, Assistant Vice President of Honda National Sales excerpted from a recent letter to dealers.

Pre-orders for Microsoft Surface with Windows RT start shipping

If you're one of the many people who pre-ordered Microsoft's Surface with Windows RT, you could be getting your tablet just in time for its official October 26th ship date - and perhaps even before then. According to a few reader tips and a confirmation email sent to WP Central, those tablets are indeed in the shipping stages and could arrive as early as next week depending on your selected delivery method. While there have been reports of delays in UK and Canada, those were apparently incorrect, and we have no reason to believe the US shipments won't be on time.

Quick hands up please, how many Gadgeteer readers smoke.  Another quick poll, how many have tried to give up.  I know I have, multiple times.  I've tried Nicotine Replacement Treatment (NRT) in the form of gum, hypnotism, cold turkey (not smoking, not the meat ) and Zyban. Yet after 30 years I'm still smoking.  Well I've now been cigarette free for 3 weeks with the help of the Joyetech EGO-T e-cigarette.  From day one of receiving this item I haven't picked up a smoke or even been tempted.
