LG announces 27-inch Personal Smart TV ahead of IFA

No room in your apartment for LG's upcoming 84-inch monster. Don't worry, the Korean outfit has something in your size, as well. The company's TM2792 promises the same Cinema 3D passive glasses technology as its big brother in a more compact 27-inch frame. The tube also promises to play nice with your other devices, featuring a MHL and WiDi for screen and content sharing. No word on pricing yet, but LG says the Personal Smart TV should land in European markets this September.

Drinking And Driving: Open-container laws in the U.S.

We're going to make this very, very simple for you. No one has any business operating a vehicle under the influence or driving with an open container in the cabin regardless of local law. That said, the good people at Car and Driver have taken the time to work up a quick infographic touching on open container laws in various states (click here to view). A total of 11 states are either noncompliant with federal guidelines prohibiting open alcoholic beverages in the passenger compartment or don't have a law against open containers on the books.

Fujifilm has been making some really handsome, retro-styled shooters lately, and the latest is the XF1. It's a compact camera that's 4.2 inches wide, 2.4 inches across and a scant 1.2 inches deep, and comes covered in either black, red or tan faux leather. There's a 2x3 inch 12-megapixel sensor inside with a retractable, manual zoom, 25-100mm f/1.8 - f/4.9 lens that's optically stabilized. You turn the thing on by twisting and pulling out the lens (like its elder brother, the X10), and you can shoot 1080p 30fps video using the 3-inch 460,000 dot LCD on the back.

HBO boss Bill Nelson announces retirement, Richard Plepler will assume the throne

After five years as king of the HBO castle, CEO Bill Nelson has announced he's leaving the company to retire at the end of the year. During Nelson's near 30-year career, he bounced through a string of corporate roles before becoming top dog in 2007, subsequently overseeing the launch of the digital service HBO Go. While it might be impossible to replace such a commanding moustache, we're sure current co-President Richard Plepler will do a fine job when he takes the helm. He's responsible (in part) for bringing shows like Boardwalk Empireand Game of Thrones to our screens, after all.

German court rules that Motorola, Samsung don't violate Apple touch event patent

Motorola and Samsung just caught a break from the law after a few hard knocks. A Mannheim, Germany court has ruled that neither company infringes on an Apple patent covering how an OS responds to and ignores touch events. While we don't yet know the full details, patent lawsuit guru Florian Mueller suggests that the German judge took the same point of view that thwarted Apple's claims in the Netherlands and the UK: the particular patent was just too broad to stick.

Go Daddy: yesterday's outage resolved, ‘was not a hack'

According to domain registrar Go Daddy, things are back to normal after yesterday's massive outage. The company noted that service outages started at around 1PM ET, with service being “fully restored” by 7PM. Contrary to claims of an attack from hackers, the company's interim CEO Scott Wagner insists that the outage “was not a ‘hack' and it was not a denial of service attack (DDoS).” Instead, Go Daddy is chalking the problem up to “a series of internal network events that corrupted router data tables,” adding that the company has taken steps to avoid a repeat of the problem.

All told, the original show is viewed in 212 territories around the globe, which is enough to take the honor. Jeremy Clarkson himself accepted the award on behalf of his cohorts and the crew behind Top Gear, saying only, "I am very proud to be involved in such a factual program.".

Many who've been following Microsoft's tablet efforts for years will have a soft spot for the Courier, a creative-focused device axed because it didn't fit the Windows puzzle. However, it looks like you just can't keep a clever idea down. Developers at Microsoft have revived the dream through Project Austin, a Windows 8 app based around the visual concept of a notebook. Pen aficionados can choose different paper types and paste in photos, but they're deliberately kept away from typing, searching and other elements that would complicate the idea.

In this day and age where owning tablets is becoming more commonplace, it's not unusual to see kids playing with them at restaurants or in school, and since this seems to be the natural progress of the culture and society we live in, why not make it an educational experience at the same time, right.
