LG selected to develop 60-inch flexible OLED by 2017

While regular consumers still wait for the first big screen OLED display to make it to big box stores, Korea's Ministry of Knowledge Economy has chosen LG to lead the a consortium charged with developing a 60-inch flexible OLED by 2017. Part of the Future Flagship Program, its goal is to generate exports and create jobs by promoting next-generation technologies. The idea is that these flexible displays could be used in windows displaying information say at a bus stations or other public places like a store.

Here we have the second interesting tidbit about the Need for Speed movie recently fast-tracked by Dreamworks studios, after finding out it would be helmed by stuntman and Act of Valor co-director Scott Waugh: it's slated for a February 7, 2014 release. Hollywood generally reserves that month for dramas, so action films released then don't face a lot of competition within the genre. None of the Fast & Furious movies were released in February, and if you're wondering, the sixth film in that franchise is due Memorial Day weekend, 2013.

. Toshiba, LG and AU Optronics have agreed to pay a combined sum of $571 million to settle a lawsuit over a liquid crystal display price-fixing scandal, Reuters reported. According to San Francisco attorney Joseph Alioto, who was the co-lead counsel for consumers suing the companies, $543.5 million will be awarded to at least 20 million consumers in 24 states, while $27.5 million will be paid as civil penalties to eight state governments. Seven other LCD manufacturers had reached an earlier settlement of $538.5 million.

Free public WiFi may be the sort of thing you automatically associate with Starbucks, but starting today, you'll be able to add NYC payphones to that short list. The city's pilot program, just officially launched, aims to spread gratis wireless service to residents of the five boroughs and the ceaseless crush of tourists they love to hate. Currently, only ten kiosk locations are live across Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan - a planned rollout to Staten Island and the Bronx is underway - and, for any curious passersby, can be easily located by their very conspicuous signage (as seen above).

. Like a lot of Android device vendors, HTC's efforts in the tablet market haven't gained much traction. But PC Advisor reports that HTC has decided to delay releasing any new tablets until it has something “unique” to offer in the already-crowded tablet market. Microsoft: Windows 8 shipping in October

At long last, Microsoft has finally set a date for the delivery of the long awaited Windows 8 to consumers. The next iteration of the operating system will be set to RTM in the first week of August and will ship at the end of October. Windows 8 will not only be released on partner devices but they will also be releasing in 109 countries in 231 at the same time. As previously announced, Microsoft will be giving all customers who purchase Windows 7 PCs the option to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for just US$14.99 on top of their existing US$39.99 deal for Windows versions going back to XP.

All told, there's a bit more than 14.1 cubic feet of cargo area out back, which bests the Mini Countryman by nearly two cubic feet.
