Nintendo patent application tracks DS from above

Nintendo patent application tracks DS from above

Most of us would have thought of our Nintendo DS (whether it is the original, ugly looking DS, the sleek and sexy DS Lite, or the 3DS, it does not matter) as the bomb in terms of the sheer number of hours of enjoyment that it has delivered over the years. Well, it seems that a patent application filed by Nintendo showed off the DS in a new light, one that is not meant for gaming, but rather, to promote and enhance a tourist's experience in a new place. Just what does this patent application involve.

How do you approach a game. Are you the type who needs to do your very best, uncovering each and every single secret in the process of leveling up your character to the most powerful combination possible. Or do you prefer to breeze through the game as fast as possible, finishing it with minimal effort, just so that you can view the ending. I suppose game developers would prefer you to be from the former group, as that would mean you would have gone through the game just as they had intended.

Barnes and Noble Partners with Microsoft

The tech world has been abuzz about the announced partnership of Microsoft with Barnes & Noble. The Redmond-based software giant is set to invest in a five-year period at least $605 million in a newly-established subsidiary (temporarily called “Newco”), which houses B and N's Nook e-reader and college textbook businesses. The relationship would be beneficial to both parties. While it would open the Nook maker to international markets, it also signals a start of Microsoft's venture into a new market.

While Google is said to be developing a pair of augmented reality eyeglasses, the dudes on Vergence Lab would rather keep it simpler. Its Buddy Holly-style spectacles, branded as Epiphany Eyewear, would enable the wearer to record videos in a first-person point-of-view and share the clips on a social network of choice. These geeky glasses also shifts into sunglasses in an instant, thanks to its “chromatic shifting conductive” lenses. A creation of Jon Rodriguez and Erick Miller, the Epiphany Eyewear is being funded through Kickstarter, where the two first met.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Preview

After covering the launch earlier today and posting about the official specs and info, it's time for something a little more personal. We've had the opportunity to have some hands-on time with the Samsung Galaxy S3, and here is a first-hand report. The Galaxy S3 shape is nicely designed to be curvy, natural to hold, and “human” (or at least, “organic”) as Samsung would put it.

SIM-free Galaxy S III priced at £499

The first of the SIM-free phone specialists to email us with some Galaxy S III prices tonight is Carphone Warehouse, which will be asking for £499 in return for an unlocked version of Samsung's S III come the phone's May 30th UK launch date. That is a little disappointing, to be honest, given that the S III appears to be more of a Samsung software upgrade over the Galaxy Nexus than a massive leap in technical terms. However, there's a possible freebie on offer if you get in quickly, with CPW giving away a Galaxy Tab to the first 1,000 buyers:.
If you could bag one of those tablets alongside the deal that'd make it worthwhile.

The sensational news keeps on coming out of Samsung's Galaxy S III announcement event tonight, with the maker announcing there will be an optional Wireless Charging Kit, which will let users power up their new phones by simply placing them on a charging pad. You'll have to buy it separately and the amount of money involved is not yet mentioned…. …but it's a very exciting optional extra.

Toyota Prius plug-in sells 1,654 copies in April, beating Chevy Volt, Nissan Leaf

The Toyota Prius, the most popular hybrid in the world, was also the most popular plug-in vehicle in U.S. last month. Compared to sales of the Chevrolet Volt and the Nissan Leaf, which sold 1,462 and 370 units, respectively, the $32,000 Prius Plug-in quietly sold 1,654 copies in April, reports PluginCars. With such strong name recognition and pent-up demand for a Prius with a cord, this shouldn't really have been a surprise. But it still kind of is.

Toyota sold more Prius models in the U.S. last month than ever before in April (March 2012 was the Prius' best month ever), even though the number of selling days was short.

Samsung Galaxy S III rumor roundup: what to expect

Samsung Galaxy S III rumor roundup: what to expect

It seems like years of waiting, but finally the almost historic (or at least that's what the hype might make you believe) London event is closing in. Just a couple of hours before we finally see what the next Galaxy flagship is all about, we will try to sum up rumors and give a better idea of what to expect. The event itself is said to bring us the next Galaxy smartphone, which will most probably be called Galaxy S III (or Galaxy S3), a name we've even in several times, including the Kies software.
At the event tonight we might see a new tablet and a new cloud storage by Samsung.

The new Galaxy smartphone was teased numerous times before.

Razer Naga Hex mouse gets Wraith Red edition for manic Diablo III clicking

Razer looks to be the latest getting into the Diablo III-themed peripheral game with a special version of the Naga Hex, even if it won't mention the click-and-slash title by name. The Wraith Red edition keeps the same six mechanically-driven side buttons as the original, but drapes the top shell and lights in an infernal red. It's otherwise functionally similar to the Razer-green Naga Hex we had mixed feelings about last month.

Canon 5D Mk III LCD light leak issue fixed

Remember the Canon 5D Mk III LCD light leak issue. Well, it seems that Canon has halted all shipments of the Canon 5D Mk III until this particular light leak issue is fixed, and when the new shipments of the “fixed” Canon 5D Mk III cameras were opened, all Canon did was to introduce an extremely black tape to cover the circuit boards, in addition to plastering another piece over the top LCD light. Well, you know what they say – whatever works, and this works just fine, I would say that the case is closed. In fact, someone managed to rip open the shell of the Canon 5D Mk III and discovered what we talked about above.

Japan creates disaster-proof mobile networks

Japan creates disaster-proof mobile networks

If ever there is a country who knows that much about technology - leading the consumer electronics industry and leaving the rest of the world in awe and begging for more - it is the land of the rising sun, Japan. Japan's top telecommunications companies are planning to strengthen their mobile networks against the perils and threats of the environment. We all know that Japan is highly prone to earthquakes and other natural disasters. Moreover, it's also reported that Japan's mobile networks during last year's tragedy became overloaded due to the heavy wireless traffic.

Microsoft shows devs the secrets to creating fluid animations in Windows 8 Metro apps

As Microsoft brings its Metro style from the mobile world back to the desktop in Windows 8, it's also focusing on keeping the smooth animated transitions users have gotten used to on certain mobile platforms intact. A new post on the Windows 8 app developer blog breaks down exactly what devs can do to achieve a consistent and fluid style in their apps even when they're using the new look. Unless you're planning on getting your hands dirty with code there's not much to see other than the (incredibly brief) animation sample embedded after the break.

Samsung unpacks the Galaxy tomorrow, we'll be liveblogging the London event right here!

Is that Galaxy S II feeling a bit stale. It's just about time for Samsung to name a successor to the massively popular smartphone, live at the company's Mobile Unpacked event at the Earls Court Olympic venue. We'll surely see a brand new mainstream handset make its debut, but what's not quite as clear is what other gadgets Samsung plans to show off in London. With defined divisions, the Korean device maker's "Mobile Unpacked" event title implies that Android phones will steal the show, so it's unlikely that we'll see an updated Tab or two.

How Less Of Everything Equals More. It's been fascinating to sample Audi's new EA824 V8 in all of its various incarnations. Our first crack at the new TFSI powerplant was in Audi's own 513-horsepower S8, and we then went on to try it out in the new Bentley Continental GT and GTC V8 models. Most recently, we dipped into the 4.0-liter biturbo in the new S7 before getting behind the wheel of the closely related S6 seen here.

Versus the previous S6 with its muy macho Lamborghini-derived 5.2-liter V10, everything is quicker, more efficient and lighter in weight.
