Radiolab releases Android, iOS app, invites you to join the sound collage

We're not going to go so far as stating conclusively that Radiolab is the best program on your dial right now, but it's certainly a prime contender for that title. The Jad Abumrad and Robert Krulwich-hosted WYNC show frames scientific topics in a fascinating and understandable manner accessible to even the most unscientifically minded among us. The program now joins the ranks of public radio shows that crossed over into the world of mobile apps, arriving on Android and iOS. For $2.99, you get access to every episode of the show, audio and video bonuses and news pertaining to the program.

Windows Phone 8 to use Nokia map data with built-in turn-by-turn navigation

Windows Phone 8 to use Nokia map data with built-in turn-by-turn navigation

You won't have to use a Lumia phone any longer to get Nokia's mapping expertise: Microsoft just announced that Nokia's map technology is being built into Windows Phone 8. Along with the requisite NAVTEQ map information, it'll carry many of the things that Nokia Drive users love so well, including offline map support, developer control over maps, and (you guessed it) turn-by-turn directions. That makes three major mobile platforms that have or will have driving directions baked in from the start — it's now becoming par for the course rather than an advantage to lord over others.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean confirmed in the Google Play Store

Rather unintentionally, Google has just let the name of the next Android release slip. As expected, it's going to be called Jelly Bean and will carry the 4.1 version number. The leaked information can currently be seen on the US Play Store when purchasing a Galaxy Nexus HSPA+ smartphone described as "soon the first phone with Android 4.1 Jell..." You get the idea.
Additionally, there's also an image showing just a bite of the visual changes present in Jelly Bean. That's a new wallpaper and a visually refreshed Google search bar on the homescreen.

Women embezzles $10M from car dealer, buys 2011 Honda Crosstour

You almost have to feel sorry for Patricia Smith, the former controller at Baierl Acura who embezzled over $10 million from the suburban Pittsburgh dealership. Despite having stolen roughly $4,000 a day, seven days a week, for seven years, Smith's personal automotive aspirations extended no further than a new Honda Crosstour. Apparently being a criminal mastermind does not ensure good taste. According to Automotive News, Smith did buy the requisite fleet of vehicles normally associated with so much dirty money but she gave away nine of the ten – including a ragtop Shelby Mustang for her husband.

Forgoing the usual succession of variants and upgrades, the launch of an all-new Ferrari is typically a momentous occasion. Particularly when you're talking about Maranello's top-of-the-line V12 supercar. And yet, since the Prancing Horse marque unveiled the new F12 Berlinetta several months ago in Geneva, we've heard and seen little of the 740-horsepower monster. Which could be why we took notice when we came across this new video clip of the F12 lapping the Fiorano test track for which its predecessor was named.

In an industrial-academic project with a chemical engineering research group at Kanto Gakuin University, Ando has developed Nurscal, a system for removing the odor that arises when changing diapers. “This system uses activated charcoal to absorb odors. This material is called mesopore activated charcoal. The activated charcoal sold by retailers is the micropore type; that has very small pores, and it can only absorb a certain substance; it could be ammonia or formaldehyde. But this mesopore activated charcoal has slightly larger pores, which absorb odor constituents.

Apple and Liquidmetal hug it out, lengthen their pact until 2014

The deal between Apple and Liquidmetal was originally supposed to be a short-term fling. Technically, it expired in February this year, less than two years after the couple first met. There must have been a spark, as the two have just decided to extend their licensing deal through to February 2014. Of course, simply having a deal isn't the same as putting it to use, and there's no certainty that we'll see anything exotic materialize out of it: the last time Liquidmetal's extra-sturdy alloy was used in an Apple product, it wound up in a SIM card ejector tool.

Now, the question is this – will or will not the US version feature the 8GB DVR add-on. That remains open to speculation, as you have to consider the general climate Stateside, where most cable operators loathe DVRs, so DVRs aren't having a great time in this part of the world at the moment.

The Multiprotector is developed by Japanese company Kinoshita Kogyo and can be used as a temporary cast for injuries that need to be stabilized immediately. It is a durable plastic inflatable device that can be placed on the injured area in the arm or leg.

Apple extends exclusive deal with Liquidmetal by two years

Apple has used liquidmetal sparingly so far - just for the SIM ejector tool for iPhones and iPads - but the company behind the material announced that the exclusive deal between them and Apple has been extended for two more years. The original deal ended on February 5 2012, but it has been extended until February 5, 2014.
With many leaks pointing to a metal back on the upcoming iPhone 5, the extended deal might mean that Apple will be using the tough alloy for the back of its new smartphone.
