Design Love: Feedly

Design Love: Feedly

The last year or two has seen a sea of change when it comes to the design of Android apps. Unless the developer has provided exceptional functionality, he can no longer expect success if the app doesn't look good. In the Design Love series, I'll share some of the best examples of the growth the platform has seen. So far, I wrote about Camera Zoom FX, Ovo Timer, Flib and 7X7.

I'm still a bit in denial that Google would actually shut down Reader on July 1. A part of me hopes that Google would share a post saying “Gotcha!” to everyone else, announcing that they aren't in fact, putting the service to rest.

Monkey bites rookie cop issuing a speeding ticket

Monkey bites rookie cop issuing a speeding ticket

Police officers are trained to be very careful when approaching vehicles they have pulled over, but we're sure at least one rookie cop in Texas will be extra vigilant in the future. Aransas Pass (just east of Corpus Christi) rookie officer Keith Moore was issuing a speeding ticket to a driver of a pickup truck, and when he went to have the driver sign his citation, a monkey lunged from the back seat and bit Moore on his hand.

10 Most Dangerous Race Tracks list sobering to watch

Sadly, the qualities that might land a racetrack on a "10 Best" list are the same ones that would place it on this list of the 10 Most Dangerous Race Tracks. Drivers and the automakers that fund their right feet are drawn to the challenge of conquering the world's most difficult sets of turns, taming the fastest straights and enduring the longest trials, and we spectators like nothing more than to watch them try.

Moto X's 10MP camera sample leaked

Moto X's 10MP camera sample leaked

It was only a few days ago our friend at @evleaks tipped the specs of the upcoming Motorola Moto X, the first smartphone made in the good ‘ol US of A. Unsurprisingly, the specs didn't do much to wow Android audiences. Perhaps we should have expected as much, Motorola's CEO did mention the device would an affordable option to more costly high-end smartphones currently available. Today we're getting a look at a picture sample from the Moto X's 10MP camera (above) courtesy of @evleaks and once again — you're probably not going to be too impressed. The picture quality isn't bad by any means, in fact, it seems more than adequate.

Samsung reduces Galaxy S4 July order by 50% to 6.5 million, from 12.2M in May. Plans early SGS3 retirement

During past week the evidence started emerging that analyst and Samsung's own forecasts about Galaxy S4 sales were too optimistic. Today we get even more indications that Samsung flagship's sales are not going as well as expected. According to ETNews, Samsung's Mobile Division has now reduced the July components order to 6.5 million GS4 units, down from 10 million in April and 12.2 million in May.
Just weeks before, Samsung was very confident in Galaxy S4 prospects.

Is your brain predisposed to make you love Rolls-Royce?

Is your brain predisposed to make you love Rolls-Royce?

XCAR has taken a look at what could very well be one of the most quintessential British cars ever built: the 1973 Rolls-Royce Corniche. The question at hand is whether or not expensive luxury items like artisan foods, designer clothing and yes, high-end automobiles are worth their monetary cost. Do they bring some undefined additional value to the table over their low-buck counterparts, or are they simply an excellent way to part a fool from his dollar bills. While the video above can't comment on four-course meals or $400 jeans, our valiant host does have a word or two on the joy a Rolls-Royce can bring to your life.

Japanese Robots: Honda's High-Access Survey Robot Goes to Work in Fukushima. Finally Some Action for (parts of) ASIMO!

Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra 4.3-liter EcoTec3 V6 nets 18 mpg city, 24 highway

There is no doubting that fuel economy has become an important factor in the highly competitive fullsize truck market, with the Ford F-150 EcoBoost V6 and Pentastar V6-powered Ram 1500 setting quite a precedent in recent years. Now it's General Motors' turn. The General has just announced that the new base V6 used in the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 models will return an EPA-estimated 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway in two-wheel drive trim, regardless of cab configuration.

Fiat 500 Cattiva on the way

Fiat 500 Cattiva on the way

While its dealer body has been clamoring for new and larger models, Fiat has actually done a pretty good trade selling all manner of 500 variants, from the standard hatchback and 500C cabriolet to its Abarth models, 500e electric runabout and special editions like the Gucci. Fiat USA was a little slow out of the gates as it built up brand awareness and its dealer network, but it's now chugging along, with combined 500 model sales outselling that of its arch rival Mini (provided you subtract the Countryman crossover, a model for which Fiat has had no direct competitor up until this point).

Raspberry Pi gets its own media center kit: £46 for easy XBMC and controller (hands-on)

The kit isn't wildly different from those you can pick up on eBay, or that could be gathered together more cheaply from constituent parts (Raspbmc being entirely free and open source), but it comes with Element14's promise that it'll work smoothly and it's designed to be up and running within minutes. That's something we can vouch for, at least - once we'd allowed the application and OS to update themselves automatically over the web, it took just a few moments longer before we were playing FLAC music files off a USB stick, adding libraries from the network and checking on the weather.

2014 Cadillac ELR whirs into Jay Leno's Garage

2014 Cadillac ELR whirs into Jay Leno's Garage

While Jerry Seinfeld was gallivanting around LA with Sarah Silverman in a Jaguar XKE, our favorite car-loving comedian, Jay Leno, was checking out the all-new 2014 Cadillac ELR. Set to go on sale later this year, Cadillac brought its ELR to Jay Leno's Garage to show off some of its styling and technology as well as give Leno some seat time in the range-extended EV. Leno owns both a Volt and a CTS-V, and the ELR is a kind combination of the two (sort of). In this episode, Leno spends some time talking to Frank Saucedo, GM director of advanced design, and ELR chief engineer Chris Thomason before logging a few miles on the sleek coupe.

Arrest warrant issued for NASCAR driver Mike Harmon

Arrest warrant issued for NASCAR driver Mike Harmon

The next step in the off-track saga involving NASCAR Nationwide Series drivers Mike Harmon and Jennifer Jo Cobb has been taken, with arrest warrants issued for Harmon and business associate David Novak. In May, Harmon was charged with stealing a car hauler and other goods worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from Cobb's shop, and after saying he didn't steal them and maintaining his innocence, seven of the stolen vehicles were found on two of his properties that same month. The issue is an acrimonious commercial separation with Cobb on one side, Harmon and Novak on the other.

Suzuki back in MotoGP for 2015

Suzuki back in MotoGP for 2015

It had been planned for 2014 but it's going to be 2015 instead – that's when Suzuki returns to the manufacturer ranks of MotoGP after quitting the series at the end of 2011 because of The Great Recession. When Suzuki stopped after 37 continuous years of racing, it said it intended to return three years later and it has been in talks with MotoGP's rights holder, Dorna Sports, since last year. No doubt, though, that fan anticipation of the team's return outdoes any dismay at the delay. It will join Yamaha, Honda and Ducati in the premiere league.

A charging station that costs more than many electronic gadgets do

Hmmm.  I thought the purpose of a charging station was to make your desk or tabletop look neater.  The MultiPot Clear Charging Hub with LED Lamp from nova68 corrals the cords, but it doesn't exactly hide the tangled mess of cables.  This 9.25″ long x 7.5″ tall x 9.25″ wide plastic pot is a lamp with 24 LEDs that direct light both up and down.  Inside are electrical outlets for your device chargers; you lay your smaller items on top while they charge.

Dynamic target tracking camera system keeps its eye on the ball

Dynamic target tracking camera system keeps its eye on the ball

Stationary Observation System for High-speed Flying Objects. This camera system can track very fast moving objects, keeping them in the center of the screen at all times. Currently under development by the Ishikawa Oku Lab. at the University of Tokyo, this latest version captures Full HD video and can be used outdoors.

“Ordinarily, to change the direction a camera faces, you move the camera mechanically. But in this system, it's not the camera that moves, it's the mirrors. This makes it possible to change where you're looking really quickly. In this demonstration, we're tracking a table tennis ball.
