Google exec praises 'magical software' working in his Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz would love for you to consider its technology akin to magical software. When Google senior vice president Vic Gundotra is the one using those words, however, they might hold a bit more weight. The executive for Skynet Google feels that way because of a close-call he had while driving his S-Class. Traffic had stopped in front of him, but Gundotra didn't notice. His Mercedes did, however, and the electronic nannies brought the car to a complete stop without a lick of input from Vic.

Netflix app now supports all Android Froyo/Gingerbread devices

Netflix updated its Android application on Friday with support for any smartphone running Android 2.2 (Froyo) or Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). Netflix launched an Android app in May of this year, but it initially only supported a handful of high-end devices. Netflix slowly added support for a few more devices over the past couple of months, but anxious users were turning to leaked .APK files to try to get the service up and running on unsupported devices. Now, thankfully, getting the app on your Android phone won't involve any tweaks.

Mario in a box powered by Teagueduino

Ever wanted to play Mario in a box. We're not sure why you would, but it looks like Adam Kumpf and his team have created what they're calling a video game in a box. It utilizes Teagueduino (which seems to be based on Arduino) and the game they created was basically to showcase what Teagueduino can do. Basically the game is based on Mario and it is literally a side scroller with the landscape and the various monsters and obstacles, such as the mushroom creatures, bricks and pipes, that are continuously rolling.

Samsung is the top smartphone vendor in Western Europe in Q2

The premier market intelligence firm IDC released its Q2 2011 mobile phone shipment estimates in Western Europe today, marking a fundamental shift in the market for mobile phones. For the first time, the smartphone shipments outnumbered the feature phone ones on the Old Continent. This change is mostly attributed to the significant rise of Android OS's adoption (352% year over year) according to IDC. The Google OS devices account for 48.5% of the total smartphone shipments.

As far as manufacturers go, Samsung has the top spot in smartphone shipments with 22% market share, followed closely by Apple, which has 21% of the smartphone market.

NBC iPad app now streams full episodes

Good news for fans of NBC shows - the iPad app that was released earlier this June has received a major update. Users can now stream full episodes of their favorite NBC shows using the app on their iPad tablets, as opposed to just short clips when it first made its debut. Everything that's available on NBC.com (which is pretty much everything on the network) can now be streamed on the iPad. The update also brings new features such as the ability to “follow” a show so that they won't have to search for new episodes each time it is aired. The app is free and available on the Apple App Store.

Kettle and Cup Concept Baffles, Terrifies

Kettle and Cup Concept Baffles, Terrifies

Try to use this concept kit without simmering your skin, I dare you. It's Friday, which means I'm cranky enough to pick apart an ill-conceived concept design. This week we take a look at Ziv Lichi's Kettle and Mug, aka Hoffee, a rather pretty piece of kitchenware that puts a tea/coffee mug inside the scalding interior of an electric kettle.
It works like this. You put the fluted cup into an identically-shaped receptacle in the middle of the kettle. You then carefully fill the surrounding moat with water, and switch on. As the water boils, the cup heats.

Then, when the water is roiling towards vaporization, the kettle clicks off.

Go to the British Grand Prix and the local fans will be cheering on their hometown heroes Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button. At the Australian Grand Prix they'll cheer for Mark Webber. In Spain they pull for Fernando Alonso. In Germany, it's showtime for Sebastian Vettel and Michael Schumacher. Not every country with a Formula One race is represented on the grid as well, but India will be when the F1 circus rolls into town in late October.
The subcontinent has only had a couple of F1 drivers in its history with Karun Chandhok and Narain Karthikeyan, both of whom have achieved limited success.

Nvidia CEO: No Mobile Strategy Means “Deep Turd”

Tuesday Nvidia president and chief executive officer Jen-Hsun Huang said that a vast majority of the company's revenue will be generated by its mobile processor business and not its long-standing graphics card division. In fact, revenue from Nvidia's mobile chip arm is expected to grow to $20 billion by 2015 - its PC-based GPU business will only grow to $7 billion in the same timeframe. Those numbers speak volumes about where the industry focus is pointing.

Love getting all dressed up in a suit, and heading off to corporate meetings is your cup of tea. Well, then make sure you have the right kind of tablet device to go along with you, and an iPad is way too casual, while the BlackBerry PlayBook does have an air of authority, the lack of decent apps have proved to be its Achilles' Heel. Hopefully Asus' latest Eee Slate B121 business tablet will not suffer from that fate, as it intends to deliver power, portability and security features in a single device, targeting businesses, health care facilities, and other institutions as the market of choice.

The Robopocalypse is coming - just not in the way you'd feared. DreamWorks and Twentieth Century Fox have joined movie-making forces to reanimate Daniel H. We might laugh at the crustacean now, wondering how the heck did it fall for a robot, but think about the future when robots cross the Uncanny Valley and become so lifelike, I won't be surprised to hear of humans and robots (who passed the Turing Test, of course) lobbying for them to get their marriages recognized at federal and state level. I digress – to keep things in perspective, researchers actually waved four sets of Robocrab arms in order to attract the attention of a live female, and one of them was successful enough that she ran towards the set – only to be disappointed, I suppose.

iPhone 4 shipping times increased, iPhone 5 imminent?

While the iPhone 4s/5 has yet to be officially confirmed (rumors don't really count), it's only natural that if Apple were to roll out a new handset this year, they would at the same time start to cut down on production of the previous generation's model. The iPhone 4 has consistently been listed as 24 hours shipping time in the past, but it seems that the time has been increased to 1-3 days. The two carriers who are carrying the iPhone 4, AT&T and Verizon, have both listed the iPhone 4's estimated shipping time to be between 1-3 business days.

Toyota trades miles for knots with new Ponam-35 boat

Toyota doesn't just make crafts for landlubbers. The Japanese automaker is venturing into the ocean, and this isn't the first time that Toyota engineers have put on life jackets. In the late 90's, Toyota tried its hand at building a boat targeted at towable watersports enthusiasts. The Toyota Epic was a Lexus-engined ski boat that was built for a few years before the automaker backed away in 2001. Now, Toyota is ready to head to sea with a very different type of craft.
Called the Ponam-35, this nearly 40-foot cruiser is a stylish ship that gets power from two diesel V8 engines sourced from the Toyota Land Cruiser.

Flybus relies on flywheel to stash kinectic energy

The Flybus sounds like a dream to ride on, and no, it will not suddenly sprout wings and take to the skies, but rather, it will be able to take advantage of the kinetic energy generated whenever it brakes, winding up a flywheel which will feed energy back into the wheels whenever the acceleration process begins. Capable of winding up to 60,000 rounds per minute, this would eventually translate to emissions-free energy, helping both gas powered and electric vehicles all the more efficient.

Bing updates homepage

Microsoft has started rolling an updated version of its Bing search engine to the public, which features some changes in the page's layout. Text links to sections such as images, videos, and shopping have been moved to the top navigation bar, and the “popular now” bar at the bottom has been given a larger font size as well. Overall the front page does look cleaner, though I'm still not a fan of the image background they've got going on – Google's cleaner, blank background does it for me. Other than that, the site still functions in the same way as how Bing normally works. To view the changes you'll need Windows 7 and IE9.
