NVIDIA unleashes GeForce GTX 690 graphics card, loads it with dual Kepler GPUs, charges $1k

Would you look at that. NVIDIA hinted it would be coming today, and it looks like the tease is living up to the hype. The company stormed into the weekend at its Shanghai Game Festival by unleashing its latest offering, the GeForce GTX 690 - and oh yeah, it's packing two 28nm Kepler GPUs. Trumping the recently released GTX 680 as the "worlds fastest graphics card," it's loaded with a whopping 3,072 Cuda cores. The outer-frame is made from trivalent chromium-plated aluminum, while you'll find thixomolded magnesium alloy around the fan for vibration reduction and added cooling.

Now, the Justice Department has cleared the prolific mapsters of the wiretapping violations. The DOJ made its decision not to push for prosecution based on reports from employees and investigating key documents reports Wired.

Apple promises to build 100 percent green data center

You've probably read our previous post a few days ago about Greenpeace's claim that Apple is using “dirty” 19th century coal energy to power its plant that hosts iCloud (like most people in the USA, as 50% of electricity comes from coal) . While Apple did acknowledged the report, the company released a statement saying that it does have a plan to transform its data center into one of the greenest data centers in the world, if not in the U.S. alongside a new facility that will be built next year. But just a few days after the issue came up, we just learned that a construction on a 10,000 sq. ft.

Samsung not responsible for the “Wake Up” flash mob protest

In response to the recent events that involved Samsung as the “supposed” mastermind to yesterday's “Wake-Up” flash mob protest in an Apple Store in Australia, Samsung Electronics Australia said that the company has “nothing to do” with the protest.  “Samsung Electronics Australia has nothing to do with the 'Wake-Up” campaign,” the company said. Of course, Samsung came to mind as the company has a history of poking at Apple with the very recent “iSheep” advert that featured  a herd of sheep and the Samsung Galaxy S3 on it. So, who's the culprit here.

Ice Cream Sandwich build 6.14.84 leaks for Droid RAZR/RAZR MAXX

A new Ice Cream Sandwich build for the Motorola Droid RAZR and Droid RAZR MAXX has surfaced, and sings point to it being an official release for the Verizon Android duo. The leak bears software version number 6.14.84 and measures in at roughly 343MB, matching the file size listed on a recently exposed Verizon update schedule. Further suggesting that the build may represent a nearly final form of Android 4.0 for the RAZR series is the fact that it requires the most recent 6.12.181 Gingerbread update in order to install. The file should be going public via the folks at DroidRzr.com by the end of the day.

Ford books $1.4B, profits dragged down by Europe and Asia

What a difference a few years make. Back in 2009, Ford Motor Company's North American operations were dragging down its earnings. The company reported a net loss of $1.4 billion in that year's first quarter when market share in the U.S. was falling but rising overseas. The situation today, however, is the mirror opposite.

Today Ford reported a first-quarter net income for 2012 of $1.4 billion on the strength of sales in the States. While that's a 180-degree turnaround compared to the same quarter in 2009, it's still a decline in earnings compared to the $2.6 billion earned just last year.

JFK may be a place that many, many people have gone to before, but it's safe to say that the Space Shuttle Enterprise will be going there boldly. Much like the Space Shuttle Discovery turned heads in DC last week, Space Shuttle Enterprise will be stopping traffic in New York City today. NASA has confirmed that today's 747-100 ferry flight across Manhattan is a "Go" and that the duo will "fly at a relatively low altitude over various parts of the New York City metropolitan area on Friday" before landing at JFK.

Samsung applies for patent on emotional recognition, wants to feel out how you're feeling

Samsung might not give off the immediate impression of a warm, fuzzy company, as it really comes off more like a faceless device-manufacturing juggernaut, but that doesn't stop it trying to get a handle on what people are feeling. According to a recent patent application, the company is putting together a method of recognizing the emotions of an individual based on action units (AUs). And what exactly are those. They're components of a facial action coding system: something designed to reference the contractions of facial muscles.

With his use of Red cameras, 3ality rigs, and high frame rate 3D technology, no one can accuse Peter Jackson of being stuck in the past. Need more evidence of his anti-luddism. He just gave the first projection of footage from his 3D opus "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" in its full 48 fps glory at the CinemaCon convention in Las Vegas. With the public having endured 80 years of 24 fps film-watching, Jackson appealed to viewers to allow their eyes to adjust to the doubled rate during the ten minute screening. But the reaction showed that public acceptance might take a while.

Beijing Motor Show is further proof of China's automotive importance

Why The World's Top Automakers Are Flocking To Beijing. Beijing's government has had to resort to a registration lottery to hold down its growth. My first trip to China came shortly after General Motors opened its first joint venture assembly plant a dozen years ago. Back then, Beijing was a city of countless hutongs, the narrow alleys and neighborhoods where most residents once lived. Today, most of those traditional communities are gone, the few remaining ones hidden behind modern skyscrapers.

Those old streets never could have handled today's traffic. Not that the grand new boulevards and highways are coping much better.
